Standing on her fin, Kendra clumsy jumps into the pool. The water, as always, felt incredible to Kendra. Lisa dives down and gracefully swims around her.
They swam for what seemed like hours. Kendra thought to herself about how the water feels so cleansing. Then she hears Lisa's voice in her head. "I use a combination of body and fish oils mixed with chlorine in the pool. You know, it's good for our tails."
Kendra couldn't believe it. "You can hear me?" She thought.
Lisa nodded. "Come to the surface," she said through her mind.
The two merfriends both swam to the surface.
"Wow!" Kendra exclaimed. "I didn't know mermaids were telepathic!"
Lisa laughed. "I know, right? I actually found that out two years ago. I kept hearing mermaids singing in my head whenever I swim in the ocean. However, this only works underwater."
"Wait a minute," Kendra says while climbing up a waterfall decoration to sit on. "When did you became a mermaid?"
"When I was 12 1/2," Lisa answered, sitting down next to her. "I was just a normal girl. One day my legs started to itch, so I took a bath. And then this popped." She flicks her pink tail. "You?"
"My 18th birthday," Kendra replies, admiring both their tails. They seem to tickle whenever their flukes touch. "My legs were itching like crazy, then when I was alone upstairs, getting dressed for my birthday dinner," she paused, then flicks her tail. "You know."
Lisa placed her hand on Kendra's shoulder. "Without water? That must be so painful."
"It was." Kendra continues. "In fact, I don't even know why. It couldn't have been a disease, cause my family aren't mermaids. I even "accidentally" poured water on their legs, and they don't change, so it must only be me." She splashes her tail.
Lisa reassures her. "Same here. For years I've been doing my own experiments to try to find out why I am a mermaid. But I've got nothing." She's starting to cry. "In fact, the reason why I invited you was because I was hoping you have the answers."
Kendra looks into Lisa's wet eyes. Feeling tearful herself, she hugs Lisa. The hug lasted for a good minute.
"Maybe," Kendra reassures her merfriend. "Maybe there is no explanation. Maybe this is who we are. We're mermaids. Why? Who knows." She moves back Lisa's blonde hair, comforting her. "Honestly, I'm glad I don't have the answers. It makes me feel special."
Lisa wipes away a tear. "Thank you Kendra," she smiles. "After all those years of being a secret mermaid, I now have a best friend." She places her hand on Kendra's tail.
Kendra's heart races. She's relieved that their not underwater because right now, Kendra is thinking about becoming more than just friends.
