Dani rushed upstairs as fast as her heeled sandals would allow her to, ran inside her bedroom and subsequently locked herself inside. Her face was red and her thoughts were muddled, as she was embarrassed beyond belief that her best friend of sixteen years apparently now had a crush on her. She laid Randy's birthday present slowly down onto the floor(The fact that it was now his birthday as well instead of being another two months away was another disturbing fact that he'd have to get used to) and when she looked upwards at her new reality, Daniella sighed with relief. Like Mom had implied a couple of minutes ago, Dani's room had not been altered very much. The walls were still white. They weren't painted pink or lined with frills and lace. His bed wasn't filled with stuffed animals. There wasn't even a vanity table in the corner. For the most part, it was still the same old room that Dan had grown up in. He was relieved to see that his video games were still lined up against the wall, his basketball hoop affixed right above the bookshelf. His old Green Army Men were still standing at attention right above his bed, the same ever since he was a kid, In fact, Dani couldn't really notice very many changes at all. It seemed that the only major alteration from Mom's magic spell was her clothing drawer.
Dani opened it, briefly rustling through her new wardrobe. She picked up her school uniform- Dan and formerly Kat attended Catholic school, which in light of the fact that they were from a family of witches now seemed ironic- and stared at it. The crisp white shirt was now a few sizes smaller and cut for a girl. Dani rolled her eyes at it and the black skirt, and below them found a baseball shirt and another one that as Dan he had got for Christmas back when Skyrim was popular.
“So apparently I am a tomboy” she thought. “If I have to be a girl for six months, at least it's nice to hold onto my boyish personality”.
Then another thought entered her mind.
“But I'm being forced to do this against my will. I hate it!”.
Dani squeezed the bridge of her nose to calm herself down. It didn't do anything, but at the moment she felt that it might help her, and it did.
She turned around and stared for a moment at Randy's present. It was wrapped in emerald green paper, which was Dan's favorite color. Did little lovesick Randy know that piece of trivia and wrap it up specifically because it was Dani's favorite color too? Dani didn't have time to ponder this question or open the present as she saw her mother somehow phase- phase- right through the locked door.
“Daniella” she stated in her sternest mom voice, her hands on her her hips, Dani noticing that one of the hands was holding a magic wand: “that was very rude of you to do, young lady. Randy and Craig are your friends, and they took the time out of their day to be here. I want you to go downstairs and apologize for blowing them off.”
For a moment, all Dani could do was stare at her Mom. Magic and witches were one thing, but what just happened was straight out of a movie or a comic book. Phasing was something that Kitty Pryde or The Vision was supposed to do, not moms.
“What the hell?” was all Dani could mutter out, her arm outstretched to indicate what was upsetting her. She winced once she realized how bratty her voice sounded. “Just like Kat” she reminded herself.
“I cast a spell to make myself intangible” Mom answered matter-of-factly.
Dani looked dumbfounded.
"You know, Daniella, running upstairs to your bedroom and crying is about the most girlish thing you could do. If you're trying to hold onto your masculinity, you're doing a bad job at it."
"Mom! You just phased into my room! Now I'm going to paranoid for the rest of my life that I'll never have any privacy again!".
The face of Rachel King softened somewhat. Dan was taking all of this much worse than she had expected him to. She sometimes took for granted that Mundanes like her son weren't used to the world of witchcraft where transformations were simply a matter of course, no different than a hazing ritual at a frat or sorority. She gently put her free hand on her daughter's shoulder.
“Listen, I know how much of a shock this is, but I will be there to pick you up every step of the way, Dani. What is it? I can't help that Kat chose you to transformation, that but is there anything else that I could help you with?"
