Dylan, Chad, Ray, Mick, Vince, Annie, Rico and Tanna hung on the railing watching as the ferry approached the illuminated pier of Pleasure Island. Practice had just finished an hour ago, when the guy pulled up and offered them round-trip tickets to Pleasure Island for tonight at 6 pm only. Almost all the guys grabbed them.
Dylan asked the guy why so many, and why us?
"Good will. See I am the dean at Cosgrove Prep. Your team is playing them next week."
"We aren't throwing any games," Dylan said starting to hand back his ticket.
"No, you see the tickets were for my players, but I just got a call that their business broke down out in Shelbyville, so they can't use the tickets. They expire tonight, and I remembered your school is nearby, so I brought them here. Use them or not. They're worthless after tonight."
He drove off.
Coach Wilson and assistant coach grabbed a couple.
Rick grabbed two, because he had a date later.
Willa cuddled Rick in the booth on the lower deck, and commented how she seemed to be the only girl on board. Rick said that the other players didn't already have dates, and kissed her. She was troubled. It wasn't just the other players, all the other passengers and crew that she saw were male.
Vic stood on the dock and frowned. He had missed the six o'clock Ferry. Ma had made him eat dinner first. He walked over to the box office to see if could use the ticket for a later Ferry.
Andy, Justin and Pike also missed the ferry, they just missed it. It was 100 feet off shore. Pike's granddad had his fishing boat at the marina near the dock. Pike took Justin and Andy out, and they followed the ferry. Pike commented it was weird that Pleasure Island wasn't on the charts. Andy said that he heard it was really an amusement park built on barges that moved from port to port anchoring itself just far enough from towns to avoid taxes.
Justin shouted that the fog was rolling in. The ferry started to disappear in the mist. Pike closed the gap between the ferry and the fishing boat. His grandad's boat disappeared into the fog. They would make it to Pleasure Island with their boat.
The ferry docked, and the players raced down the gangway and on to the midway. There were amusement rides, games, music, flashing lights, donkey cart rides, a sign announce fireworks show in an hour, another sign announced No Minimum Age for Beer or Smokes at the Saloon. There seemed to be something for everybody.
