Overlooked

You run full-speed for home. Your speed is not really different from when you were a girl since you always were in good shape, but the slight increase in height and stride does give you a slightly faster pace. You know you're not going to beat Zach home, since he has his bike, but you know he'll head for the shower when he gets home, and your parents will probably be making dinner, which means no one will be looking at the back yard. You can sneak over the fence, into the shed, change, and run around to enter through the front of the house, and no one will be the wiser.

Surprisingly, things go exactly as planned. Well, almost. You're quite sweaty when you get to the shed, but you figure you can brush it off as you running from the store, and make a note to keep a towel and a water bottle around for next time. Next time! You are already getting way too used to this, you think as you grin to yourself. Instead of popping back over the fence after changing, you sneak through the side gate and around the house to the front door. From there, you smoothly enter as though everything were normal.

"Dinner's nearly ready, sweetie, why don't you come sit down," your dad calls as he spots you entering, and after washing your hands in the sink, you do so. Soon, Zach also joins you at the table, as do your parents. You don't pay much attention to the conversation, still thinking about your day, until you hear Zach commenting.

"The game went fine, Dad, our team would've won too, but the other side got a ringer," Zach brags, and you nearly snort your water out your nose. Zach's rewrite of the game failed to mention that it was Zach who stuck the "ringer" - you - on the other team because he thought you would be dead weight. Of course, you couldn't correct him. Trying to cover up your reaction, you raise your napkin to your mouth and cough lightly.

That's when you see it. You're not sure why you didn't notice it before, maybe because you wore a three-quarter length sleeve. However, poking out from the edge of the sleeve were three numbers, more if the sleeve rode up a bit. Zach's cell phone number! You forgot it was there, you were in such a hurry to get home! If it was someone else's number, you could've made an excuse, but Zach would definitely recognize his own number if he saw it, and good luck trying to explain that away, especially since it was in Zach's own handwriting. Trying not to act suspiciously, you carefully put your left arm down on your lap so the table hides it from view.

"He's a pretty good player, though, I told him to join us again if he has the chance, apparently he just moved here," you hear Zach continue, and while you are still nervous that someone noticed your arm, you can't help but grin to yourself that Zach is actually praising the little sister he usually torments without knowing it. After dinner, you hurriedly clear the table as quickly as possible and head for the stairs.
