"No way!" said Amy firmly.
But Keira persisted undaunted.
"Please, Amy. I need to test before I present it to my mentor. And your horses are the perfect test subjects. It is a synthetic horse growth hormone, after all," said Keira.
"I said forget it and I meant it, " said Amy as she put down her soda and continued grooming her horse. "I don't want to expose them to any weird hormones."
"What? Don't you trust me?" said Keira.
Amy turned and glared at her. Keira was brilliant but her odd experiments often caused more problems than they solved.
Keira blushed and withered a little under Amy's intense stare. Amy returned to her grooming.
"Okay, so I made a few mistakes in the past. But who hasn't? And I have learned from my mistakes. This experiment will work. It's perfectly safe, I promise," said Keira.
Amy stopped and turned her head, arching an eyebrow.
"Okay, maybe there were a few minor side effects. But it's not like any of the lab animals died or anything," said Keira.
"Forget it, Keira. I love you and I value our friendship, but I don't want to risk the health of any of my horses. You'll have to find another animal to use as a test subject, " said Amy. She put down her brush and grabbed her soda, downing the rest of the can in one gulp. For some reasons she was really thirsty today. "I think you better take your formula and go home. I don't want one of my horses to accidentally drink it and get sick. Where is it anyway?"
Keira looked at her with a mixture of fear and anxiety, her face a pale white. She said nothing, just pointed at the can in Amy's hand. Amy turned the can around. She could find no label. But she did see her cola sitting on the post still full. She dropped the can like it was hot.
"What the hell!? Are you trying to poison me?" asked Amy.
"It was an accident, I swear," pleaded Keira. "I didn't mean for you to drink it. I brought it to try on your horses!"
"Then why did you put it in a soda can?!" asked Amy angrily.
"Just convenient, I guess, " said Keira, shrugging her shoulders.
Amy slapped her hand on her forehead. She knew Keira was telling the truth. It was typical behavior for the absent-minded genius. Amy stormed off towards her house.
"Where are you going?" asked Kiera.
"Where do you think? To the hospital to get my stomach pumped," said Amy.
Amy didn't even pause, still striding quickly and purposefully towards her car. Keira had trouble catching up to her.
"Wait! You don't need to do that," said Keira, grabbing onto Amy's hand. Amy turned and glared at her. "By the time you reach the hospital, it will already be completely absorbed into your system. It's just a waste of time. You can't get rid of it now."
Amy crossed her arms.
"And what exactly is this stuff supposed to do?" asked Amy.
"It's kind of a super growth hormone. It's supposed to stimulate muscle and bone growth in horses. So, they will get bigger as well as stronger, " said Keira with excitement.
Amy was not as amused. She continued to glower at Keira. Amy was sure that it had been an accident, but she was just as sure that Keira was thrilled to have a human test subject. Keira would have to prove her compound was not toxic to humans eventually. Amy considered going to the hospital but despite her faults Kiera was honest to a fault. If she said it was pointless to go to the hospital, she was telling the truth.
"None of lab animals got sick, " said Keira sheepishly. "Besides, it's designed for horses so it shouldn't have any effect on you."
Amy sighed.
"Fine. Let's go inside and get something to drink. Something that is not one of your lab experiments," said Amy as she walked towards her house.
Keira followed like a puppy, practically skipping as she followed her friend. She was glad Amy had not asked about the side effects. The hormone cocktail had made the lab mice very moody and irritable. She hoped her friend did not exhibit similar behavior. But it was designed for horses. She was 100% positive nothing would happen to her friend.
Well, almost 100%.
Maybe more like 99% positive, 93% at the least.....
