Nicolás sat quietly at the table as his mother continued her cleaning. Soon enough, her work absorbed her entire attention, giving the curious boy the opportunity to lift his pack onto the table. Slowly, carefully, motivated by his curiosity, he unzipped the pocket for a peek at the captive mouse.
Nathan heard the zipper's teeth unclasp as an unseen hand unzipped the pocket and let a thin shaft of light shine inside the gloomy interior of the pocket. With a squeak, Nathan launched himself out of the pocket, executing a perfect four-footed landing on the surface of the kitchen table.
Nicolás cried out in surprise at how fast the tiny mouse had moved, but then he reacted. He slammed a hand down, trying to catch the tiny mouse. Nathan raced across the tabletop. The boy, now out of his chair, tried to pursue the tiny mouse as it scurried to the other side of the table. Unfortunately, Nathan came up short at the edge of the table, seeing the steep drop to the floor.
"Stop!" The youth shouted, but the loud words just motivated Nathan to make a blind leap of faith, jumping into air. Gravity pulled the tiny mouse to the floor, but Nathan landed with much less of an impact than he expected. But now the youth's huge sneakers came into play as the giant boy stomped toward him, still shouting at him.
Nathan gazed around the gigantic kitchen, seeking out a place of safety. He looked up to monitor the position of the kid when he saw that Nicolás had grabbed an empty jar from the counter. If the giant boy brought the jar on top of him, Nathan would be trapped again.
He squeaked again and made a desperate attempt to reach the fridge. He felt sure he could find a place of refuge beneath the heavy appliance. His tiny body sprinted into the darkness beneath the fridge. Outside, Nicolás uttered some angry words of frustration.
Nathan's tiny heart beat fast and his whiskers twitched nervously. He still wasn't safe yet...
