Karl barely slept. He was waiting outside Chad's father's office, when the veterinarian drove up.
"Hi, Karl, anxious about Chad? I'm sure he'll do fine."
"I thought maybe I could sit on the endoscopy, see how it goes."
"Sure, but you may be bored."
Twenty minutes later, Chad was out of his cage, and getting an examination.
"Can I inject him with the anesthetic?" Karl asked. He waited while the doctor prepared the syringe. He knew the doctor would help administer it, but he was sure he could substitute the syringe with the real anesthetic for the one he brought filled with tubo-curarine. It was a paralytic that had been mistaken as an anesthetic decades earlier, but left the animal or person fully conscious and able to experience all the pain that real anesthesia usually blocked. Karl made a show of cuddling Chad, while he switched the syringes.
Chad's father held Chad with one hand exposing his veins and assisting Karl to guide the syringe into the correct vein. Chad whimpered softly, and slumped over on the table. He lay there blinking his eyes slowly and breathing shallowly. His eyes stopped blinking, but open.
"That's a bit unusual. They usually close their eyes."
Karl put his hand over the open eye, and said, "Why don't you plug the endoscope in?"
"That's not exactly how it works. First, I lube up the scope, then I turn on the picture. See." He pointed at a monitor screen.
"Oh!" the doctor exclaimed. "I'm really sorry about this, Karl."
"Is there something wrong with Chad?" Karl asked with serious concern.
"Well, I guess I shouldn't have put him in the same cage as Attila. You see that red swollen area, and the shiny whitish goo?"
"Yes?"
"It looks like Attila mounted Chad last night."
"Mounted?"
"Humped, raped? I don't know."
"Oh."
An hour or so later, the doc was packing the endoscope away. Chad had a healthy alimentary system for a dachshund.
"Is he still asleep?"
"Looks like it. Did you want to remove his balls?"
"Yeah, but not right now. I thought maybe on the 28th? In the meantime, I'd like you to collect as much sperm as possible and freeze it for future breeding purposes."
"Ah, a man with a plan. I can have Trevor, Chad's kid brother handle that. He told me that you hired him to train Chad for the next three weeks. He said you were going to be out of town?"
