As Mark tried to get comfortable without the air mattress under his sleeping bag, Puck flitted in through the tent flap. If the human had less absorbed in his own grumbling, he might have noticed the flicker of light against fabric. However, he rolled onto his side and shut his eyes without seeing Puck at all. Puck drifted down and whispered in his ear. "What do you want?" It was not something that Mark heard as a voice, more like one of his own thoughts. The grumbling about his ex-wife was pushed aside and the man sighed. What did he want? Not to be a middle-aged man stuck out in the woods. This was all well and good for the kids - they enjoyed the camping, and didn't mind roughing it.
Puck flitted to the other ear and whispered "Work is so hard and why do you have to have so many responsibilities?"
A scowl formed on Mark's face as he followed that thought. Bills. Having to pay for a car, clothes, food, a place to live, his son's college coming up, saving for retirement. It never ended. The odd voice in his head whispered "Wouldn't it be nice to leave all that, never have to worry about bills or money or things again?"
This time Mark smiled as the thought of being independently wealthy, not having to worry about anything ever again. "Oh man, I wish." It was barely spoken, little more than a whisper, but Mark's response was all Puck needed. If the fairy had been cruel or evil, he could have simply killed the human - dead people had no responsibilities. But that was no help for the forest, and while Puck loved to tease and torment life, he never willingly took it. Instead, he used a bit of magic to put the human into deep sleep. Then he began circling the man slowly, letting the sparkles of magic drift down around him. The sleeping bag crumbled away, followed by his T-shirt and briefs, leaving Mark naked on the ground. The glow continued to swirl around him, turning a soft pink as it closed to form an even coating surrounding him entirely. Mark shifted in his sleep, drawing his arms and legs in automatically against the cool night air, but not uncomfortable enough to wake. There was already a noticeable difference in the human's appearance - his skin became smoother, his body trimmer as he slowly lost years.
Puck chuckled to himself, and flitted out to look for more targets. It would take a while for the magic to do its work, and he was not patient. Better to have fun with another human and then come back to see how things were progressing.
