Her mom turned towards her, slightly angry and puzzled, "Kat, please, use your inside voice, and why are you so out of breath?"
Kat sat down at the kitchen table and collected herself before asking again, "Where's Dan?"
Her mom looked even more bewildered, "Who's that, Kat? Did you have a sleepover I didn't know about? Tell me that I at least know them."
Kat couldn't believe what she was hearing! How couldn't she know who she was talkling about? This was her family she was talking about. It's almost as if her mom had told her an aunt or uncle was visiting, but even more glaring! She then responded very accordingly.
"I don't remember."
The words that came from her mouth surprised to say the least. Dan was her brother, right? Then why did she say that?
"Well," her mother said, "when you do, feel free to ask again."
Her mother turned back to the stove and flipped the bacon in the pan while Kat simply walked out of the room, trying desperately to form the correct words to say what she was thinking. She say on a couch in the living room and thought for a moment. In fact, she thought for a while, since her mom soon had breakfast ready.
"Kat, breakfast is ready!"
Snapping from her thoughts, Kat rushed back into the kitchen. She sat in a chair and soon began shovelling food into her mouth. She was very hungry.
"So," her mother said, "do you know who Dan is yet?"
