Chronivac Version 4.0

Testing out the new program...

BRZZZZZ!

The robotic sound of the doorbell was like nails on a chalkboard for the Rollins family, and they'd lived in their house for all of two days. Trevor Rollins and his mother had moved halfway across the country "for the best job I could have," according to his mother, but Trevor was guessing it was more to get away from his Dad, who was basically a money-grubbing drunk. If that was the purpose of the move, it had worked. But now they were in a new town, Trevor was in a new school, and that meant making new friends, which after two days hadn't happened yet. Trevor was a pretty normal kid with relatively good grades, mostly 'B's, but a few 'A's here and there. On this summer Monday afternoon, Trevor had slept until noon and now had the house to himself while his Mom was at work. Well, he had the house to himself until the doorbell rang.

BRRRZZZZZZZZZZZ!

The doorbell rang again, pressed longer this time. Trevor rolled his eyes. "I'm coming, I'm coming!" Finally he reached the door and pulled it open.

It was just the freakin' postman. Why couldn't he just drop the mail in the mailbox?

"I've got a package for ya!", the postman said in his most cheerful voice. "Sign right here." Trevor gave a fake-smile and scribbled his name, then took the package and the few pieces of mail with it.

"That's weird," he thought. "It's addressed to me, and I never get mail. And how'd they already know I was here?" The move was fresh. He flipped through the rest of the mail and all the envelopes had forwarding labels on them, but this one was addressed correctly. Strange, indeed.

Trevor cut the box open - this thing, whatever it was, was annoyingly well-packaged - and pulled out a clear jewel case with one CD inside it. The name CHRONIVAC 4.0 was written across the front in Sharpie. "How cheap," he smiled. "Probably some porn virus."

The computer was on the floor, for now, the desk was still packed up somewhere, so Trevor had to lie on his chest to look at the screen. He opened the disc and stuck it in, doing a quick Norton scan of the contents. Clean. Forget the porn virus. He double clicked the icon and pulled up a clean welcome interface, with the CHRONIVAC logo in the middle of the screen. To his surprise, the program spoke.

"Welcome to Chronivac!", a cheery female voice said. "To begin your journey, click Start! If you are still curious about the Chronivac program, press Help. To exit, simply click Quit. Thank you, Beta tester!"

Trevor's eyebrows furrowed. Beta tester? What was that? Always one to figure things out for himself, Trevor bypassed Help and hit Start.

The CD whirred and the green light blinked.

--------------------------------------------------

After three hours of figuring out the program, Trevor finally had the grasp of it. He'd long since stopped thinking and had begun talking to himself. "It can change anything, huh? Yeah right!" He tried a body scan, and surprisingly it got his stats right.

14/male/5'6"/125

He laughed. "Let's make some changes. First I'll..."
