Nikka nodded to the vet tech. “Thank you, yes. I’ll head there in just a moment.” She lowered her voice and turned to the young woman sitting beside her. “Did you? I mean, I know it’s not any of my business, but…”
The woman blushed scarlet and whispered back. “Lay an egg? It’s been happening since my rooster… attacked… me this morning.”
“You started laying eggs… and went to the *vet*?” Nikka asked in disbelief, louder than she intended.
“I figured eggs, birds, vets know about birds.”
Nikka glanced around the room. The doggirl’s owner was now on his knees, a surprisingly dog-like tongue hanging from his mouth inches from the husky’s proffered crotch. “I’m sorry, I have to go. It was good meeting you.”
“Wait. You’re getting to see one of the vets now, right? Can I come with you?” The woman rested a hand on her lower belly. Did it look rounder than a few minutes ago? “Please. I don’t want to wait for this to happen again.”
