Despite Gloria’s apprehension of Mr. Harris she was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable his class was. Mr. Harris was engaging, making his students take an active interest in the lesson while communicating it in a way that allowed his students to apply it to something they could relate to. As the bell rang to dismiss class Mr. Harris now spoke. “Everyone make sure to read pages 15 to 30 in your textbook,” he said. “Also Gloria, Jackie, Felicia, Diane and Sasha can I see you before you leave.”
Gloria and her friends now nervously approached Mr. Harris’s desk. “Is their something wrong Mr. Harris,” Gloria asked. Derrick watched as the remainder of the students left his class before closing the door to his classroom. “Gloria I needed to talk to you and your friends,” he said.
Derrick looked at the nervous freshman girls in front of him. He could tell that the girls, aside from Sasha, were not used to being pulled aside by a teacher. “Don’t worry girls your not in trouble,” he said warmly. “I just needed to speak to you about....well something your sister gave you Gloria.”
Gloria and her friends went slightly pale as they looked at their teacher causing Derrick to grin. “I’m guessing Katie never mentioned that I knew about the ring,” he said. “Well just to put you at ease I’m already well aware of it and don’t worry your not in trouble.”
Derrick now watched as the girls fidgeted slightly. Although his talk was meant to put the girls at ease he could see that they were noticeably nervous.
“Girls seriously relax okay,” he chuckled. “I can see how nervous you are. I need you to understand, your not in trouble but Katie and my sister asked me to talk with the four of you. Personally I found it odd since there are five of you but then again Claudia was never good at math.”
Gloria paused as she listened to Derrick. “He remembers Sasha as one of my friends but Claudia or the others don’t,” she thought. “When I get home I’ll have to call Katie, hopefully she can give me some advise.”
Derrick now looked at the girls intently hoping he could explain himself to the girls without frightening them. “Listen,” he said. “Katie and the others already told me about the ring. They asked me to talk with you about being careful with it. I’ll be honest I don’t know an incredible amount about it but I do know it’s powerful. I here to ask that while you’re in my class you don’t use it Okay?”
The girls nodded quietly as they looked at Mr. Harris. “Okay Mr. Harris,” Diane said quietly.
Derrick smiled as he looked the girls over. “Good,” he said warmly. “Girls I know high school can be overwhelming but I know you five will do fine. I’ve known Gloria for awhile now and from what I’ve seen she has a good head on her shoulders. If any of you need any advise, magical in nature or not, feel free to ask. My door is always open.”
“Thank you Mr. Harris,” Gloria whispered, blushing.
Derrick smiled as he now opened the door to his classroom. “Your welcome girls,” he said, handing them passes to their next class. “Hope the rest of your day goes smoothly and remember feel free to ask me any questions you might have.”
Gloria and her friends nodded as they now quietly made their way to their next class.
