Kaitlin’s miatake

added by O 5 years ago AR

Laura and Kaitlin began carefully searching the floorboards for the dice. Both women were breaking into a cold sweat as they nervously searched the car. They both understood the consequences of what would happen if they couldn’t find them and continued to drive.

“If the dice roll accidentally we’re going to keep getting younger,” Laura whispered. Kaitlin nodded shakily in response as she continued to search. Laura carefully checked under her chair as she searched the area around the car. “Another roll would put me between 27 and 22,” she thought. “But what happens after that? If it’s a high roll I could end up a teenager again, then...things would get really bad.” Laura tried to shake the thought from her head as she gazed under the seat. “Any luck,” she asked Kaitlin.

“No not yet,” Kaitlin groaned. “Laura we gotta find those dice before we start driving again. If they keep rolling then....” Kaitlin trailed off as she fearfully looked at Laura. Laura could only nod in understanding, the same fears she had were obviously going through Kaitlin’s head as well. As Laura looked under her seat again her eyes went wide. She could see a small golden object glowing under her seat.

“The dice,” she whispered. Taking a deep breath Laura slowly reached under the seat. Carefully, so as not to disturb it, she placed her hand around the glowing golden object. Laura now carefully began to remove her hand from the seat. Laura briefly thought of diffusing a bomb as she removed her hand from the seat. Staring at the die she breathed a sigh of relief. “Found mine,” she gasped wiping her brow.

“That’s great,” Kaitlin said with relief as she watched Laura place the small golden object back in the box. “Still looking for mine.”

“Check under the seat that’s where mine was, just be careful.”

Kaitlin nodded as she craned her neck to get a better look. As she gazed underneath she noticed a small silver object. “I see it,” she exclaimed.

“Okay good,” Laura said. “Just be careful getting it. If it rolls...”

“I know, I know,” Kaitlin huffed. “Any roll and I’m getting younger.”

Kaitlin stared at the small object. The die was perched precariously on the rail of the seat. Kaitlin wiped her brow as she looked at the die, if she wasn’t careful the die could fall and Kaitlin knew exactly what would happen. “Another roll would put me anywhere from 33 to 28,” she thought. “That’s not that bad but do I really want to take the chance? We still have about three hours ahead of us. Anything could happen and I might need those years before everything is said and done.”

Shakily Kaitlin reached her hand under the seat. Thankfully Laura hadn’t said a word however Kaitlin could see her hands visibly shaking. As her trembling fingers reached for the dice she could feel it in her hand. Sighing in relief she tried to palm it only to see it slip from her fingers.

“Noooo!”

Laura jumped placing her hands over the box almost instinctually. As she fearfully looked at her friend she could see the golden lights once again drifting off of Kaitlin’s body. The honey haired woman had a look over anguish as she slowly became younger.

“Thirty four years you have walked this earth. Now this number is but twenty nine, each roll of the dice returns more of what you have lost.”

“Damn it,” Kaitlin screamed as she angrily picked up her silver die. “The damn thing slipped out of my fingers at the last minute.”

“Sorry,” Laura said meekly as she looked at her angry friend. “Well at least your still older than I am and...well...you do look good.”

Kaitlin smirked as she looked herself over. The extra weight she had put on her hips over the last couple of years had melted away leaving a curvy but firm figure. As she ran her hand through her hair she notice don’t it seemed a little healthier than before. She now hope that the two women could stop this, it could of been worse than being stuck in their late twenties.

“Thanks Laura,” she smiled. “This is probably as far as I’m willing to go though. We gotta be more careful.”

“Says the girl that dropped them,” Laura laughed, causing Kaitlin to grin. “Okay True,” she answered. “I need to be more careful.” Kaitlin now carefully placed her die back in the box, making sure it wouldn’t roll. As Laura resealed the box. As the two twenty somethings now stood up they looked eachtother over smiling.

“You know there’s are worse things than going back to our late twenties,” Laura said with a smirk. Kaitlin sighed, smiling slightly. “Okay I agree with you there but Another roll would put us back in college,” Kaitlin stated. Laura nodded as the two looked down at the box fearfully. “Cmon,” Laura said. “We still got a long drive ahead of us.”

As the two now set off on the road again they both looked down at the box. “THree hours,” they both thought. “Let’s try to avoid anymore accidents.”
