Dani relented. “Okay. Thanks, Mom.”
Standing up, Rachel lifted her hands and chanted a complex series of syllables. A network of glowing lines appeared along all sides of the room including the floor and ceiling. Turning to Dani, she said, “Hold out your hand.”
Trying not to shudder, Dani obeyed. Her mother took her hand and pressed a finger to the middle of her palm, causing a small circle of arcane symbols to manifest around the spot. Just as quickly as they appeared, the mark on her hand and the lines on her room vanished. For Dani, a sudden wash of input flooded her mind, making her shiver.
Rachel sat back down on the bed, making Dani gasp.
“Are you alright, honey?”
Dani looked at her wide-eyed. “I…I felt that!”
“Well, the spell does cause a warm sensation, but it’s harmless. It usually fades within a few minutes.”
“No! I mean I felt it when you walked over here and sat down.” The girl hugged herself and stared at her belongings with new fascination. “In fact, I can feel everything in this room! My bookshelf, my bed, everything, I can feel them even when I’m not looking at them. It’s so weird!”
Rachel peered at her. “Hm, now that is unusual. Your hidden talent may have to do with your belongings. Some form of psychometry, perhaps? I may have to study it later to be sure. In the meantime, as long as it’s not debilitating, you may simply have to deal with this, for now. Can you do that?”
Closing her eyes, Dani explored these new sensations. While strange and unfamiliar, it wasn’t uncomfortable or painful. It was more like having another limb or bodily extension. Focusing on the wall between herself and Kat, she could actually detect where her side ended and her sister’s began. Surely, if Kat tried to get in, she’d be able to sense it immediately.
“I guess so. Thank you for this.”
“Anytime, sweetie. Now let’s get back to your party, okay?”
