A brilliant flash of white light blinded Laura causing her to blink. Slowly she rubbed her eyes as she looked out across the playground. Laura noticed the other kids currently swinging from swings or hanging around on the giant wooden fort. “Ugh I’m too old for that,” the 11 year old snorted as she turned to her best friend Kaitlin.
The honey haired girl had an odd look on her face as she gazed out at the other kids. “Hey Kaitlin,” Laura called. “You feeling okay?”
Kaitlin stared at her friend for a moment. She had just had the strangest dream, she’d been a grown woman along with her best friend Laura. They worked together and some boring old office working on math for a living. For the girl it seemed so strange yet so real. It couldn’t have been real though she would never work on math for a living.
“I’m okay,” Kaitlin said groggily. “I just had the weirdest dream that’s all.”
Laura gave her best friend an odd look. “So did I,” She said. “I dreamed we were grown ups and that we had boring jobs. It...it kinda sucked.”
“Oh my gosh,” Kaitlin exclaimed. “I had the same dream too.”
The two 11 year olds gaped at eachother as they tried to shake the odd dream from their heads. It had to have been a dream yet it seemed so real. As the two girls tried to focus on the dream they could feel it fading away from their minds, as the memory faded they could almost see their grown up selves yelling for them to stop. Soon enough though the images vanished from their young minds. The two girls smiled at each other as they gazed out across the playground.
“I’ve never heard of friends actually sharing the same daydream,” Laura giggled as she brushed her brown hair out of her eyes. “Me either,” Kaitlin grinned. “Guess that’s why we’re the best of besties. We share everything.” The two girls giggled before walking towards the playground. “Hey I know this is lame but you want to go on the swings,” Kaitlin asked. Laura shrugged and smiled as she looked at her smaller friend. “Sure why not,” she shrugged. “Might as well enjoy it while we can. We’re starting to get a little too old to enjoy the playground.”
As the two girls happily talked about playing and their future the old man and the shop could only shrug. Whether tLaura or Kaitlin wanted to admit it this was exactly what they wanted. Both women were getting older and wanted a second chance. The dice had given it to them, perhaps more than they actually wanted. “Be careful what you wish for,” he grinned. “Cause in my experience you just might get it.”
