“My name is Edgar Romulus, and I am the architect of the evolution of this species,” he said, “Though until recently, my official title was Special Advisor to Doctor Greene. Of course, that was until I revealed my true nature to him and offered him the gift, which he wisely accepted.”
“You can't be serious,” Rick replied.
“You must be blind not to see why this is the best chance for man's survival,” Dr. Greene said. “We're suffering through climate change, overpopulation, new diseases – lycanthropy stops those diseases in their tracks! We become hardier, more resilient, able to survive the harsher environments we've created through our hubris! And we no longer will need an arms race! The dominance structure makes conflict so much easier to mitigate, plus, since we become walking weapons, we don't need nuclear arms or even guns!”
Rick glanced around, struggling to comprehend what he'd been told. “You sound insane. All you've done is unleash uncontrollable, unstable biological weapons upon the general population!”
“All in the name of Darwinian evolution,” Romulus replied. “Not everyone is destined to survive this evolution; the weak WILL perish, and the species will become stronger for it. Right now, Tom and his family are operating on instinct, as all werewolves do upon their first transformation. When morning arrives, they'll change back and blend into society, but they will be fully attuned to what they are. Since they were changed by their own genes going active, they will be able to transform at will, and their primary drive will be to turn anyone they see as worthy. The rest – the bitten ones, they'll change back, but have less control over their transfomations, still needing the moon to achieve the transformation itself. Thankfully, NASA has over 500 samples of lunar rock and dust collected, which can be distributed easily. Once each of them has transformed from a lunar-triggered change, they'll begin to succumb to the will of the beast. By the time the full moon rises in one week, most, if not all of the Cape will be changed, and then we will continue to spread further every day and every moonrise until the earth is ours.”
“Jesus Christ,” Rick said, realizing the enormity of what humanity was facing.
“Of course, you understand why I'm not worried in the slightest about telling you my plan, I'm sure,” Romulus said with a sinister and confident smile.
