Keeping the workers in line

added by Anonymous 5 years ago A S O

After a brief, entirely understandable freaking out upon finding myself now an ant, I marshaled my concentration on the problem at hand.

If I could get to the amulet, which must have effected this transformation, I felt I could reverse it. I started toward the sofa on my six thin limbs, which made my scurrying movements across the floor happen at a rapid pace.

I had almost made it to the base of the monolithic sofa when I encountered a line of ants. Each individual seemed to be following the one in front of it. Most of them were carrying scavenged morsels, crumbs I must have dropped around my apartment, in their mandibles. Each ant in the line looked identical and entirely alien in their weird symmetry. Sadly, to any observer, I would have looked the same as any of the other ants in the line.

They paid me little heed, so I was prepared to ignore them until two larger ants that I hadn't seen converged on either side of me.

These ants were huge! At about an inch long, they were twice my size. They immediately started pushing and prodding me to get into line with the other ants.

"Hold up!" My antennae twitched.

They clicked their mandibles, which were heavy and serrated, much more fearsome looking that my own much less impressively designed mouthparts. Being caught between those fierce body parts looked like a one-way ticket to instant decapitation.

Still, I needed on the sofa. I waited for them to lose interest so I could dash from the line, but they must forestalled me. One of them sprayed me with a cloud of pheromones.

"What the hell?" Antennae twitched as they registered a compelling desire to docilely join the other workers.

What had they done to me? I was starting to thinking like a proper little worker ant!

The two huge warrior ants guarding the caravan of workers felt satisfied as I moved into the line that was heading to a narrow crack in the baseboard in the wall of the room. Follow! Gather! Work! Those were the imperatives that gradually crowded out all my other concerns, including the one about getting back to the amulet and becoming human again.
