"Wait, what do you mean she's pregnant?", asked Jeff after we somehow managed to get Jessie back to his place.
"I mean, she's really pregnant. Trust me, Ms. Glenn made sure we all knew the signs."
"But that makes no sense!!! It's just a disguise, but now it's like...she's real. This, this is too much."
I felt compelled to slap him. "Focus!!! We need to help her!!! How long do we have before her water breaks?"
"No idea. But considering how fast this pregnancy's progressing, I'd say soon."
"What should we do?"
"Give me some time. And look something up for me, would you?"
When Jessie woke up, she found herself in the maternity ward of some regional hospital, in a bed with her pregnant belly poking out. She could still feel something inside, and knew instinctively that she'd be giving birth soon. How the hell did this happen?
"Don't move, Grace, the doctor said it's bad for the fetus."
Jessie looked up. Standing right next to her bed was a younger Latina woman, with windswept brown hair and wearing a pink jacket. Sitting in the seat behind her was a Latino man looking at a newspaper, clearly not involved at all in this discussion.
"Who are you?"
"It's me, Leila. Your brother's wife? He said you were pregnant, so we came over to get you to this hospital."
"Brother? I'm an only child."
Just then, the man got up and closed the door and shades. Leila grabbed Jessie's hand and put it up against her neck. Then Jessie knew. She knew what the distinctly soft feel of a mask felt like.
"Wh-what?"
"It's me and Jeff. We had to whip these masks up so we could get you proper care without raising any suspicions. We've spent the last three hours making sure you're ready."
"Ready?"
"You're going to have a baby, Jessie."
"But I'm still a teenager!!! I can't have a baby!!!"
"I'm afraid it doesn't matter. The hospital confirmed you're pregnant. All we can do is wait."
"You don't actually expect me to be a mother, do you?"
"Well, you'll certainly be a better one than your mother." It was then that Leila noticed water soaking through the bed.
"Shit, her water's already breaking. Jeff, help me!!!"
"Wait, you know what to do?"
"Thank Ms. Glenn for that. Just get me what I need. And don't let anyone else in!!!"
After a very long period of labor, Jessie was holding a tiny infant girl in her arms.
"You have a name for her, Jessie?"
"Name? You think I'm going to keep her? I can't keep doing this. I don't want to be some old crone with a little girl running around. It's too much!!!"
Jeff looked a bit concerned, but he put a reassuring hand on Jessie's shoulder.
"We'll do what we can. For now, let's jet before someone notices."
