Mr. Bennett walked into the door of the police station. Being Sunday, there wasn't much activity as most people had the day off, save the few officers that were assigned for duty. So, it was a bit of a surprise to get a call from Chief O'Hara to see him at his office as soon as possible. It didn't take much for Mr. Bennett to figure it had something to do with Alice Decrux, and he was here to bail her out...again. He made his way to the Chief's office and knocked on the door. The chief motioned for him to come in.
"Chief O'Hara," Mr. Bennett said as he walked into the office, shook the hand of O'Hara, and sat down. "It's rare for you to call me, and on a Sunday no less. I take it this isn't a friendly call?"
"Straight to business, I see," Chief O'Hara replied, "Very well. It's about Ms. Decrux."
Mr. Bennett sighed and asked, "What did she do now?"
"She's dead," Chief O'Hara said flatly. Mr. Bennett's expression changed as he sat up. "We caught her trying to flee town. One of my men chased her out of town, and she ended up taking a curve too fast. She died in the crash when her car went flying off the road and down a ravine."
Mr. Bennett pursed his lips as he took in the news and said, "That's most...unfortunate."
Chief O'Hara arched an eyebrow, "I was expecting more of a reaction."
"Oh, don't get me wrong here," Mr. Bennett explained, "Whatever relationship you thought we had, it was purely professional. She paid me a regular retainer, and my job was to represent her in law." He paused as he thought for a moment. "Although, now with her death, the only thing left for me is to be the executor of her will. Who else knows?"
"Outside of the police station," Chief O'Hara explained, "No one else yet. We're still doing the autopsy, but we plan on doing an official announcement sometime tomorrow. I did send an officer to Megan Decrux to let her know."
"She's going to be devastated." Mr. Bennett replied as he thought for a bit. "She's the only family that stuck around town even after all that Ms. Decrux did to her."
"At any rate," Chief O'Hara continued, "The body's yours when we're done with it."
"Right," Mr. Bennett replied as he got up from his chair, "I'll see to it that she gets a proper burial. In the meantime, I need to go see Megan Decrux." He made his way to the door before finishing, "Thank you for the information, Chief. It's been a pleasure." The police chief nodded his head as Mr. Bennett made his way out of his office and towards the exit of the police station. His next stop was Moon Lake College to visit Megan Decrux.
