"Yeah, I'm okay," the blue-eyed head replied.
"Or maybe it should be 'we're okay'," added the yellow-eyed head.
"Luke, I think that ring just changed you into a hydra," Max said.
"Like in Greek mythology, where it gets more heads as you cut one off?" Zack added.
"Well, either way, DO NOT even think about cutting off any heads!" snapped the red-eyed head.
"Hey, what do you think happens if you take off the ring?" Mark asked.
All became curious when Mark said this: what would happen if Hydra Luke took off the ring? The three hydra heads looked to their front paw and used their claws to remove the ring. As soon as the ring lost contact with the finger, the scales turned back into skin, the claws and paws turned back into human nails, hands, and feet, and the two extra heads vanished. All that remained was Luke--back to his old, human, one-headed self, holding the ring between two fingers.
"Well, that was incredible!" Luke exclaimed.
"Was it you in all three heads?" Max asked.
"I don't know," Luke said. "It's still a little fuzzy."
"Well, I think I should try another ring to see what it can do," Mark suggested.
"Why do you get to go next?" Zack asked.
"No kidding," Max added. "And you can't exactly use that 'I'm the oldest' line, because you and I are twins."
"Well, I was the one that Luke called," Mark explained.
Luke could tell that a fight would break out, so he suggested that the four of them just go alphabetically: Luke, Mark, Max, and Zack. It took some time to win Max and Zack over, but they eventually agreed--as long as it meant they would at least get a chance to try on one of the magic rings.
Luke set down the ring he tried on his bed, and left a note next to it that read "HYDRA". Then Mark walked over to the desk, and studied the pile of rings for his choice.
