Devon was curious just how big this place was - it had not seemed all that large from the outside. He began walking towards the back, passing several rows of 'normal' pets cages - dogs, cats, snakes, lizards. Tanks of fish, and caged birds. Some were larger than he expected, but there was something else bothering him about the place. Then he realized what it was - the place was too quiet. With all these animals, he would have expected a deafening chatter, but there were only occasional woofs, meows, and other sounds to indicate that all of these animals were here.
There was a wall past the fish tanks, but it had a large opening into another room. Devon stepped through and gasped. He had to stare a minute to convince himself he was really seeing a massive brown bear in a large cage on the left, a mature lioness in a cage on the right, and a Bengal tiger pacing back and forth just beyond the lioness. "Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!" He half whispered the old movie line to himself. Those were not the only large animals he could see - there was a moose with a huge rack of antlers, a shaggy Highland bull, a black draft horse, and more cages and enclosures going back as far as he could see. Impossibly far - it had to be a full city block deep, and he knew the store wasn't that big.
The animals were all watching him silently - it should have made him feel nervous, but he found that he felt a strong attraction to each one as he looked at it. Even the lion and tiger did not instill fear - they seemed to want him to join them, to be a friend.
