Charlie sat in his basement playing video games. With him were his four friends, David, Pat, Landon, and Eric. Charlie's basement was small, barely enough room for the tv they were playing on. Charlie's house was also very small. Even with no other siblings, Charlie's room was in the basement and his parents slept upstairs.
"Damnit Eric," Landon cursed. "We need to do a different map or something. You're just too good on this one."
"What can I say," Eric said wiping off imaginary dust from his shoulders.
"Does anyone want something to drink?" Charlie asked standing up. Pat and Landon asked for waters, and Charlie walked up the stairs and filled up some cups. It was getting late. The sun was almost set. As Charlie filled up a glass for himself, the usual noise from the basement had stopped.
"Guys?" Charlie called down. He moved the door with his foot and walked down the steps.
"Landon you can't just get mad everyti-" Charlie said. He was cutoff by a mesmerizing light. A beam of purple light had shone through the only window in the basement. All of his friends had backed away. Charlie set the cups down and started towards it.
"No don't!" David yelled.
"It'll be fine," Charlie said as he approached. "Just a flashlight or something."
But it couldn't be. The light seemed almost solid, and it shimmerd like nothing Charlie had ever seen. It sat midway between the tv and the odd arrangement of chairs and couches. Charlie could almost touch it. It was right there-
The beam his the palm of Charlie's outstretched hand and began to glow very brightly, before like a whirlpool or vortex it swirled into his hand and the room was once again dark barring the flashing tv screen.
"Did it hurt?" Pat asked a few minutes later.
"No," Charlie said. He stood up and moved his hand around as if it were a new limb. "It felt kind of good actually."
"Well," Landon said. "I think y-y-you w-were right. A flashlight, yes that's what it was."
Cautiously, the four boys returned and all occupied their previous seating to continue their game. Charlie sat down, and could swear that his hand was faintly glowing.
