Tentatively she swam out and watched as the house finished its transformation into a structure of oddly shaped coral. It's roof flattened out into a terrace like affair with a central shaft leading down, the corners smoothed out and many of the windows became spherical portholes. The garden outside turned to seaweed, anemones and other such sealife while the trees became giant stalks of kelp. She saw that the family's sedan had morphed into an odd oval shaped vehicle with a bubble canopy, a carapace like skin, a set of two fins in the front and a couple of pods that vaguely resembled a jetskii's engine on the back. It was all overwhelming.
As she went by she saw a man in jogging gear run by and get swept up by the sphere's expanding perimeter. "Oh crap!" She said as she swam over to help, only to notice the same changes that happened to her happened to him. At first he panicked but that gradually faded. His skin turned blue and yellow, his fingers became webbed, his nose receded, his legs began to fuse, his hair turned a dark blue and grew as did his breasts. She paused in the water at that last one as he turned into a mermaid in more ways than just species. Her fins had rays in them rather than her sharlike ones, but she was still distinctly a mermaid clad in a similar clothes to her, only in copper and white and a pouch on her belt for her living headphones. She soon began swimming along, with Linda following the flow of her tail through the water and her hair billowing in the current.
"Are...are you all right?" She said as the process finished.
"Of course." She said as she took off her headphones. "Nothing like an early morning swim."
"Really, you've just been changed into a Mermaid."
The blue mermaid snorted "Well from what?"
"Well from a man, a human man."
The Blue Mermaid tilted her head and gave her a look of incredulity "And just what...pray tell...is a 'Human Man'?"
Linda was shocked. "Well, it's a person. A male person that lives on land."
With that the blue Mermaid laughed. "Heard enough, I like my science fiction as well. What book is that from?"
"But you WE'RE a Man."
"And you were a six finned Mako before I showed up. And word to the wise, my face is up here."Linda then stopped staring at the Blue Mermaid's breasts and into her, admittedly beatiful face. She put her hands to her mouth in embarrasment. The Blue mermaid grinned. "Oh don't be too bashful, they ARE wonderful. But I do have another two K to swim today. I'm sure they'd like to hear about men in your creative writing class. See ya." With that the mermaid glided off.
As Linda looked up she saw that more people were getting caught up in what she could only describe as the expanding sea and were either turning or had turned into mermaids
