Matt hadn't seen Don since he went to college, but he had no trouble recognizing the giant form that filled the doorway. Unprepared for this, he wanted to run and hide, but strangely he didn't move. The magic wand must have interpreted Mr. DeSoto's wish for "pets" to mean pets that were not particularly skittish.
The giant, burly college boy strode into the room and saw the tiny Jim and Matt right away. He jumped back, opening his mouth, but nothing came out. Jim and Paul just stood there, looking up at him.
"Mr. Laird? Matt? Is that you?" gasped Don.
"Yes," said the naked one-foot men in unison.
"Oh my god, I haven't thought about you guys for ages! What ever happened to you? How did you turn up like this?!?!" Matt assumed that the wish was retroactive, taking "not missing" them literally. Don hadn't been gone that long, but he was acting as if he hadn't seen them in years.
"Your father made us into pets for your family," Jim answered. "We will do whatever you say." He seemed compelled to provide this information.
"Pets! Holy shit!" Don was still leaning against the wall for support. This concept was so startling, that he did not ask the obvious question of "how?". Of course, if he had, the pets would have been compelled under the terms of the wish to answer truthfully.
There was a pause as all three stared at each other, and then Don asked in a low voice: "Anything?"
