Shift ended with a lot of cleaning. Pop machines had to be cleaned, tables had to be sanitized, and floors had to be vacuumed. Orders kept being called in and the kitchen would lose their cool whenever it happened. Eliza just took the orders and handed the takeout to the people that had ordered it, at least until they closed and one order hadn’t been picked up. The doors were locked and immediately people took whatever they wanted from it. Tempora and California rolls seemed to be the most popular. A single styrofoam container was left by the time the rest of the staff had gotten to it.
“Hurry up Eliza or I’m going to lock you in!” One of the cooks shouted in a teasing tone before Eliza grabbed the container of Sushi and rushed out the door grabbing her purse and jacket as she went. Outside she found no vehicle and nearly slapped her forehead recalling exactly what she’d done that morning. So instead of a quick ride home it was a long walk with her hands full down streets with full bars, night owls walking around in fine garb, and a whole lot of people out on the town enjoying the late evening. Cabs honked everywhere and expensive cars roared past with high paid athletes leering at everyone from the drivers seats with sluts and gold diggers in the passanger’s seats displaying ample cleavage. Every few streets Eliza passed a rundown neighbourhood where dogs barked and police sirens wailed over the white noise. House parties blared and creepy men stood on the street corners smoking while hookers gazed at her from their spots along the sidewalks. It was all so much creepier than when she walked down to the wharf during the daylight and she was scared the whole time, but finally she arrived at the base of her apartment building in an occupied and safe part of the city and tried her keys. Much to her relief they worked. She still lived there. She still had an expensive car and millions to her name but was now Japanese and worked in a sushi restaurant. It was super weird and off putting but she was just happy to be home. She got to her apartment and sat down with a sigh on her couch dumping her purse and the sushi down on the coffee table. She sat back and wiggles her toes free of her actual sandals (the wooden shoes were in her purse) and smiled pleasantly, happy to be home.
She could have fallen asleep but her eyes cracked open and stared at that container of sushi. Magic, body altering sushi. Did she even dare try it?
