Will didn't understand the appeal of a New Years party. Maybe it was because he was too young, but his friends all wanted to stay up late and celebrate the upcoming year with all of the other grown ups. He just thought it was another day, another year, like any other. That why he wasn't at his house partying like the kid he was, but rather walking his malamute, Frosty. It clearly wasn't a wholly creative name, but Will didn't care; he was man's best friend, but more importantly, his best friend.
The air was definitely chilly, but it didn't stop him from adding a few more layers of coats, and it certainly didn't even phase the Alaskan dog who was panting happily as he walked by his owner. It was a very beautiful night as the icy air cleared the sky quite well, allowing for a grand view of the starry sky which Will always enjoyed. What he didn't notice was the sudden change in the color of the sky as he had just knelt down to brush his shivering hands through Frosty's warm, soft fur.
The dark blue sky was soon washed over with a aura of purple as the clock struck midnight. The supernova hit the Earth like a crashing wave, yet made impact gently like a light breeze. As though it were sentient, the wave of energy made its first target of its power on the boy and his dog, choosing the two as a template for the new reality that would set upon the world.
Will's petting was quickly interrupted by some kind of strange force he couldn't explain as it also somehow managed to blow his extra jackets away. The cold settled in quite fast, but for some reason, Will couldn't feel its sting. In fact, it felt a lot warmer than it did before!
"Whoa... Well, that was weird..." the young boy said, looking around curiously for what could have caused such a strange sensation. "Huh... did you feel that, Frosty?" he said, scratching at his chest as it began to grow softer and furrier.
"Mmmuure did, Will. It certainly felt strange!" The struggled response caused Will to look over to the malamute who was looking back up at him with a much more expressive face. There was a nagging feeling in the back of his head that didn't expect him to talk back, but that was quickly overwritten with the something he felt was more sensible:
'He's my best friend! Why wouldn't he respond back?' Will thought as he pulled his shirt off before it dissolved into nothingness, allowing for his growing fur out in the chilly air. Fur, which happened to look very much like a malamute, although slightly different in design compared to Frosty's, who was picking himself back onto his two digitigrade paw feet.
Will couldn't help but allow a smile to form on his stretching mouth as it grew into a half-muzzle as he looked up at the changing malamute, who now towered a foot taller than the young boy. Frosty was his best friend, but he always looked up to him like the older brother he never had.
"Well Will, I think it's about time we head home now. Shall we?" Frosty says as he holds out his hybrid paw hand for the young malamute anthro take. There was a unheard shredding sound as Will grinned giddily, his curly fluffy tail ripping through his pants before they, too, faded away, revealing his fur covered legs and shifting digitigrade paw feet. He took the former pet's paw hand in his own, the leash he held forgotten in this altering reality as they walked back home, the clear crisp silence being broken by the soft paddings of the two malamute anthros walking down the street with their tails wagging happily in sync as best friends would.
