Knowing she and her friends would be stuck in this timeline for the foreseeable future befuddled everyone. Lisa, Kumiko and Samantha found themselves having to register the three time displaced teens at Gloria’s high school. No one was especially happy about this prospect but there was very little choice. Lynne and the others needed an education. Lynne’s only consolation was the fact that Kumiko and Cole had agreed to let Tommy drive to high school.
“There is no way either one of us would be able to get you to high school on time,” Kumiko sighed. “Coles busy and I’m busy, so Tommy...you drive to school and straight back.”
As Gloria now found herself getting ready for her first day back after Christmas break, she could see her sister doing her hair in the mirror. “So,” Gloria asked timidly. “You looking forward to going back to school?”
Lynne frowned at her sister as she returned to brushing her hair. “No not really,” she grumbled. “All of my friends are either infants or haven’t been born yet. How the hell am I supposed to fit in?”
“It won’t be that bad,” Gloria offered hopefully. “I mean, I’ll be there and so will my friends and don’t forget you still have Tommy and Tricia with you.” Lynne blew out an exasperated sigh as she angrily slammed her brush down. The girl was still angry with herself for trapping her friends here. Tricia had been devastated when her parents returned to their own time and had not spoken to Lynne. Tommy on the other hand was having a difficult time at Cole and Kumikos, the two parents still had no idea how to talk with a teenage son, especially when their infant son was sitting right next to them. It resulted in Tommy and Lynne’s relationship becoming strained.
As Gloria made her way downstairs for breakfast she could see Lynne sulking at the table eating breakfast. Lisa, as she had been attempting to do since finding out Lynne would be staying for an extended visit, now tried to talk with the girl. “So how have you been doing in school,” Lisa asked. Lynne grunted as she picked at her breakfast. “Mostly A’s,” she grumbled. “Some B’s. What does it matter though? Some of the teachers I had are probably classmates of mine now or not even in high school yet.”
“Lynne,” Lisa sighed. “Things will be okay. You still have me and your dad and Gloria. We’ll be here to help you through this.” The sound of a car horn caused the grumpy red head to push herself away from the table. “That’s Tommy,” she mumbled. “I’ll see you when I get home mom.” Quickly the girl sprinted out to the waiting car, Lisa could only watch as Tommy, Lynne and Tricia sped towards school. “Gloria keep an eye on her,” Lisa sighed. “I’m worried about her.”
As Gloria got off the bus she talked with her friends about Lynne and her friends. After looking at her sisters schedule she noticed they would be in many of the same classes together. As the bell rang Gloria and the others made their way to class. Entering the room they could see Mr. Harris shuffling through some paperwork. As he saw Gloria he beckoned the girl over towards his desk. “Everything going alright,” he asked. “Claudia clued me into what was going. Is it actually true? This girl Lynne and her friend Tricia are from the future!?!”
“Yeah it’s true Mr. Harris,” Gloria whispered. “Things have been a little weird with her lately. She’s kind of upset at being stuck here.”
“Well I’ll try not to freak her out,” Derrick grinned.
As the class began to settle in Derrick now looked them over. “Morning class,” he said. “Hope everyone enjoyed their vacation. Today we’re going to start reviewing the Civil War so if you could all start by opening your text books to page 154.” As the class did so Lynne groaned loudly. Derrick furrowed his brow as he looked at the annoyed redhead teen. “Something wrong Lynne,” he grumbled.
Lynne stared dully at Derrick Harris. “You already covered this with me Mr. Harris,” she sighed. “We covered this in class before Christmas break.”
Gloria and the others gave each other looks of concern as Derrick and Lynne stared each other down. “I’m afraid that’s not possible Ms. Turner,” he said in a low voice. “Seeing as I haven’t taught this lesson in high school before.”
“Ugh I forgot,” Lynne groaned. “This is back when you were still kinda sucked at teaching.”
A low giggle emanated through the class as Derrick angrily glared at Lynne. “Looks like someone is looking for a detention slip,” he growled.
“Who you kidding,” Lynne countered. “You don’t have the balls to give a student detention and you never have.”
Derrick looked close to exploding as he glared at Lynne. Before he could say anything Ms. Dean entered the classroom, unaware of Lynne and Derricks confrontation. “Excuse me Mr. Harris,” Morgan said shyly. “If you had a moment I needed to speak with you.”
“Hey Mrs. Harris,” Lynne said. “Your hubby is trying to intimidate me right now. He forgot that you wear the pants in this relationship.”
“Husband,” Derrick and Morgan both said in shock. Flustered the two adults looked at one another, shocked by Lynne’s statement. Trying to compose himself Derrick turned back towards Lynne, his eyes twitching with anger. “Principals office now,” he growled. “And by the way. You have detention.”
Lynne smirked as she now stood and slowly stride out of class. Turning back she looked at the two adult teachers, a smirk on her face. “just so you know Mr. Harris,” she said. “I always liked your wives class better.”
As the girl now exited the class Gloria and the others could only gaze at one another. The school day had barely started and already Lynne was making one hell of an impression.
