Police had been clear Pete Parker (that was his name) couldn't have raped her because he was dead. While she was at college getting an education he had gotten drunk rolled his car down the hill. Leaving a pregnant girlfriend who gave birth to twins. This meant that the only other person couldn't be found. The victim support people confirmed that she had been raped but the only forensics that could be pulled off of her body weren't in the system.
She sat smoking a Camel thinking about her positive pregnancy test, she started to look into Ben's online profile and found that his Spanish teacher was someone who was pregnant with a second child. She picked up her cell and phoned the school.
"So you have no idea how you got pregnant?" Sofia asked.
"I always wanted another child..." Alex stroked her bloated belly.
"Do you remember the father or was it IVF?"
"I always wanted another baby sister or brother for Beatriz..." she sighed happy with her new 'condition'.
Sofia then decided to talk to her child, Beatriz was far more powerful.
"There was a man in Mama's bed who she tried to shoot." she remembered.
"Why did she try and shoot him?"
"He had done something funny to Mama and then to me. I lost my memory of him but I remember Mama acting like she had found a snake in her bed, she was really pissed off and wanted to kill him."
Recording both conversations on her camcorder she showed a "six pack" of pictures of Ben, one of him, another with longer hair and darker skin, then others who looked like him. Bea picked Ben out straight away.
"It was this man?" Bea nodded.
She then told about how her mother didn't want kids for a few years, she wanted to wait until Bea was older. Then overnight she was pregnant and about to give birth.
" I thought she swallowed a pumpkin seed, (Sofia went to interrupt) urbane legend, then I though she might be pregnant but not know it. But her belly was always below her ribs, then after that man came it was full. Is he the Devil? Did Mama sell her soul to the Devil for a new baby?"
Bea started to cry at this thought and Sofia stopped recording. She waited and then she recounted the old perfume bottle that she had been sprayed with. It took Sofia weeks but she tracked it down to the old Chinese man. His granddaughter, Li, translated:
"I can say I sold this product because I know the law won't help you. You have a look of an assassin before the murder is committed, you want this boy dead. I cannot allow that."
"What can you allow me?"
"Balance, to turn him into the very things he took advantage of."
"You can turn him into a woman?" Sofia was intrigued by this.
"Size, strength and weight matter. I can turn him into a girl of the same age and looks..." more translating and Li concluded: "A female version of his male self and what he fears the most."
"Can I pick the form, say fat and ugly?"
"No, never." was the reply.
"He has been exposed to the Desire, this gives him a level of immunity. If he had never visited this store then yes, but he has used it at least twice. Further he may embrace the change, he has pretended to be your former lover, he has the ability to control what you will try to do to him."
The old Chinese man told her what Sofia needed and she next visited him as his babysitter she went about collecting the part for her spell as Ben fell asleep...
