A familiar stinging sensation in her legs pulled Jane away from reading the last few lines of her book. It was a sign that she would soon transform into what she fears most. Fortunately, it was one of those times where she didn't need to run and hide from anyone. She was in charge of the house whilst her husband was at work, her eldest daughter was out with friends and the younger children were deep asleep. Although, she still had the issue of removing some of her clothing otherwise they would be ruined during the shape shift. Another more painful sting was the sign that she needed to hurry. Her time as human was running out.
Jane wasn't born human. She had been born as a mermaid, but choose to live on land. She met and fell deeply in love with her husband. He was the main bread winner while she adopted the role of a stay at home mom and home maker.
Jane could pass as a human as long as she didn't get exposed to water from the ocean, or forget to return to the ocean at least once a month. Luckily, Jane had a sanctuary she could go to in order to do just that. A secret Grotto with a pool that connects to the ocean. Jane hurried down into her grotto, which also held potions, books and other things from her former life.
Jane tore off her clothes and dove into the pool. She transformed into a beautiful mermaid with a lovely sea green tail, a golden pair of star fish which acted as her bra. Some assorted small seashells in her hair, a pair of small sand dollar earrings, and a beautiful Pearl necklace. Jane breathed a sigh of relief as she started comb her hair and sing in the beautiful tone that Mermaids were legendary for.
Unbeknownst to her, Jane left the secret entrance to her grotto open. And her beautiful voice carried up into the house, attracting one of her family to the source.
