You've been wandering around town for quite a while now and you're even happier than when your first changed. You love being a dog!
It's like having everything built in. You don't need clothes, because your fur keeps your warm and your long wet tongue keeps you cool. You don't need shoes, because you have pads and claws. You don't need money, because if you find food lying around you just eat it. You don't need silverware because your teeth are sharp enough to cut into just about anything. You don't need a cup because your tongue acts like one when you want to lap up some water. You most certainly don't need expensive entertainment like TV or video games, because you're surrounded by scents, and every scent tells a story. It's like having an AR game in your nose for crying out loud!
You find that you don't pay much attention to humans anymore, except to pity them and hope the drop some food. Poor things. They really do make the best food in the universe and they don't even know what it smells like... what it REALLY smells like.
Maybe you should have been worried when you realized you didn't understand much of what the poor humans were saying anymore. After all, learning to talk is one of a human's first big achievements in childhood. You don't really care though. Anything that really needs to be said can be said quicker and simpler with your tail. Who needs all that extra baggage of gossip and trying to sort through all the nonsense to try to figure out what someone actually meant? Maybe you should have been really worried when you stopped understanding the silly human doodles on signs and stores and vending machines. After all, learning to read is one of the most important accomplishments of growing up. How much of your human childhood was spent learning to spell things out properly and getting quizzed on books and essays? You don't really care though. Dogs have their own way to leave messages that DOESN'T take years to learn. You noticed it the first time you sniffed a fire hydrant that had been peed on a couple of days earlier someone's young neutered male small-breed slightly timid pet dog; just a couple of whiffs told you almost everything about him! You can't believe you've been flushing your autobiography down the toilet every day because your only alternative was to scribble around on flat stuff.
"Man, dogs have it easy!" you think as you let loose and leave your mark on the side of a building. Then you turn the corner and notice a border collie tied up right outside a little shop. The collie notices you too. You try to let out a friendly bark and a few wags of your tail to announce that you're coming over. No sooner do you arrive than you get a wet nose sniffing around your butt. Despite a small lingering qualm that this might be gross you go ahead and try sniffing your new pal's butt too. Snuffle, snuffle. Your little wet nose twitches wildly at the end of your snout, and after a few seconds you feel like you know her better than you'd know a human after a half-hour conversation. You also realize that you actually do kind of know her already, since you've picked up this same collie's scent markings several times on the surrounding streets. You want to be friends, so you get down on your elbows and do a play bow. She wants to play to, but she's still tied to that lamppost with just a few feet of cord.
