Jeff shivered. The bombardment of raindrops that had continued unabated for the past half hour appeared to have ended.
He unfolded his wings and shivered again. "It's cold," he realized. The rainstorm must have been a passing weather front that had lowered temperatures. Oh well. He needed only to fly back to his room where he could warm himself and think of a way to shed his butterfly form for a full restoration to his human self.
Without the gusts of wind and buffeting from falling raindrops, he flew steadily back toward his bedroom window. He started to fly back inside his room when he smacked against the transparent pane of glass.
"Oww." Jeff cried. "What the hell?"
Someone, and it didn't take long to discover who, had closed his window. As he fluttered on the other side of the glass, he saw his brother walking in his room.
"Barney!" Jeff smacked against the glass pane. "Help me!"
The repeated impacts against the windowpane did nothing but cause Jeff's wings to shed a colorful dust of scales at an alarming rate. Bare patches on the wing caused him to shiver again.
Suddenly, he saw a crystalline form swirling in erratic loops as it drifted toward the yard. Jeff stared for an instant. "It's a snowflake!"
Then, he thought about the implication. Soon enough, the pioneering flake had company. Lots of company!
The plunge in temperature had brought a full-fledged winter storm, the first of the season.
With renewed urgency, Jeff flung himself against the glass. "Barney! You have to let me in!"
Inside the room, Barney flipped off the lights and exited, never even noticing one of the year's last butterflies as it flew in desperate loops just outside the window.
