In a land of magic it was no surprise weird things happened. In this particular land one such occurrence was the random, spontaneous appearance of dungeons, castles, fortresses, and other such places guarded by all sorts of horrific monsters. Everything from caves guarded by a mighty dragon hoarding her treasure to a derelict fortress guarded by kooky kobolds ... one never knew what one was getting into when encountering these foul places, aside from one thing they all had in common...
Treasure.
The treasure oddly seemed to scale in size with the amount of danger involved in acquiring said treasure. Since the magical kingdom obviously had a monster problem, there were already many well-equipped (and some ill-equipped) adventurers eager to handle these monsters. These dungeons were a far more enticing option than just slaying random monsters. And so the majority of adventurers began to explore these dungeons.
Some dungeons seemed to constantly shift and change, their hallways never leading to the same place twice. The treasures never seemed to end ... and neither did the monsters. These were the most beloved of dungeons, as the majority of dungeons began to shrink and fade away after being cleared of monsters and treasures for the first time.
Near the small town of Verzen, mostly populated by farmers, travelling merchants, and the occasional lady of the night, one such Mystery Dungeon opened up. Nobody cared about it at first...
... until the mysterious Disappearances ...
Sometimes when an adventurer delved into the dungeon’s depths, they never returned. It was as if they just vanished! Search teams went to find them, some returning, others not. Though those that did return often had fabulous loot to sell or use. Magical swords, bags of gold, enchanted goblets .... the bounty of the dungeon was incredible!
Someone from another world might think that nobody would be stupid enough to risk their life adventuring deep into this unholy place, fighting scores of who knows what just for a chance at some rare treasures.
Of course nobody would be that stupid!
Well, except maybe....
