"Rat..."
The word left Rachel's lips as the clouds shifted and the light of the moon caught her eyes.
She couldn't move. It was like the light was paralyzing her. At the same time it felt like the light was setting her on fire. Every muscle ... every nerve was burning. She could hear her heart beating wildly. A burst of adrenaline hit her like a wall and she was suddenly free of the strange light and running.
Running faster than she ever had in her life.
Rachel ran all the way back to her apartment. Her body felt... powerful and agile. And she could see and hear like she never had before.
Rachel rushed inside and slammed the door shut. Her breath came in ragged gasps as she tried to collect herself. She walked toward her bedroom, then collapsed to the floor. Her bedroom door was wide open and the curtains of her windows were pulled back. The moon cast a white glow across the room and she was right in the center of it.
