Now that all the girls were asleep, Brooke finally had time to clean the bottles and spoons and little plastic dishes she used to feed them and to put her own supper in the microwave. Just as it was done, she heard her daughter cry. "Bad timing for a nightmare, sweetie" she mumbled, but when she picked Sophie up the foul stench from her diaper told her why the toddler had really woken up. "Shh, it's okay, we'll get you clean in no time!" Brooke promised as she carried sobbing Sophie over to the changing table. But the slimy greenish mess she found in the diaper took a while to wipe off. "Poor sweetie, it's really not nice to sit in yucky poop like that. You're getting another tooth, aren't you?" she said softly.
Luckily, Sophie had mostly calmed down by the time the sensitive skin on her butt was clean. But before she could put a new diaper on her, Brooke was distracted by another baby's demand for attention: Zossie was standing up in her crib, holding onto the bars for support, looking a bit like an angry monkey in a cage and making little noises of discomfort. Brooke knew she was going to cry at the top of her lungs within a minute and wake up Ava, the third girl who was still sleeping peacefully, unless she was given her soother in time. But where was the soother? Sophie must have spit it out in her crib. Brooke was afraid Sophie might fall from the changing table if she left her alone on there even for a minute, so she picked the half-naked toddler up and hurried over to her crib - thank god the soother was still there. Brooke picked it up, wiped it on her shirt and put it into Zossie's mouth in one fast motion, making Zossie sit back down in her crib contently.
With a sigh of relief, Brooke finished Sophie's diaper change. Then she sat down on the couch with her baby girl on her lap, hoping to get her back to sleep with cuddles and some breast milk.
Suckling on her soother, Zossie looked on from the crib as Sophie snuggled up to her mom and suckled on her breast.
