“We need to get Pull-ups for Maddie.” You answer.
“Oh, has she been wetting the bed?” Amber asks.
“She’s started having stress incontinence lately. She’s constantly having little accidents, sometimes big accidents. She needs to start wearing protection.” You answer.
“Uh...really? I haven’t noticed her--”
~You 100% believe what I just said.~ You interrupt her skepticism with a command.
“...alright, I guess you’re right. It wouldn’t be good if she keeps getting her pants wet.” Amber says.
Being a girl and thus a little more familiar with these things, Amber guides you to the baby isle. You look past the Pampers Cruisers, the Huggies Little Movers, the Seventh Generation Free and Clear...until you spot the Pull-Ups.
“This is what we need, right?” You ask, picking up a package.
“No, those won’t fit her.” Amber says, grabbing the package out of your hands and putting it back on the shelf. “Besides, she hates Minnie Mouse.”
“What about those, then?” You ask, poking a package of Pampers Easy-Ups.
“Dude, look at the kid in the picture. Maddie is obviously way too old for them, she probably wouldn’t fit.” Amber says, pushing your hand back down. She takes a few steps forward.
“This is what she needs.” She explains, grabbing a pack of S/M Goodnites and dropping it in the cart.
“Is there a difference between the boy and girl versions?” You ask, holding a blue package.
“There’s a little extra padding in the middle for girls, and a little extra padding in the front for boys.” She answers.
“Yeah, but…” You hold the package in front of her. “Isn’t Madison more into Spiderman and Hulk than she is into Disney Princesses?” You said that out of pure speculation based on the few hours you've spent with her so far. She came off to you as one of those 'anti-girly' types.
“Good point… I think we should get both, just in case.” She says as she takes the package from you and puts it in the cart. “The thing is, Maddie tries to portray herself as a tomboy most of the time, but she’s a lot more girly than she wants to admit. I think she would enjoy the pink Goodnites, but she would probably tell you she prefers the blue ones. Anyway, I need to ask you…” Amber takes your hand and looks at you. “Is Maddie having multiple significant accidents a day?”
“...yes.” You answer, thinking it over for a second.
“Then she’ll need to be able to change when out of the house.” Amber explains. She takes a few extra steps and starts scanning the assortment of baby wipes. “We’ll get a slim, hard-shelled tub for now.” She says, putting one in the cart. She then picks out a travel sized bottle of baby powder, and a tube of barrier cream. “This way, Maddie can try both when changing herself and see which work for her.”
“Well, when I’m changing her.” You say.
“When you change her? You’re going to change her pullups?” She looks at you and snickers, not sure if you’re joking.
“I mean, you can change her too, if you want.” You shrug.
“Why would Madison let someone else change her? Why wouldn’t she just do it herself?”
~She just doesn’t. Don’t think about it.~
You pick out a diaper bag with dinosaurs on it that runs you up another $20 (good thing you have that fifty), and then finally get one more special item...before checking out and heading back with your bags.
