Zack chuckled to himself as he watched the first van of wedding guests arrive. He was happy for his brother John and his beautiful fiance Lauren, but Zack hated Lauren's family with every fiber of his being. Zack and John came from a traditional middle-to-low income American family. They had a good childhood but money was always somewhat of an issue, despite the insistence of their father. Regardless, Zack loved everything about his family and life. They were a tight bunch who loved big gatherings. Lauren's family was the exact opposite. She was one of the most genuinely nice women Zack had ever met, but she came from a family of rich assholes who looked like they hated the sight of each other. They treated family events like chores and Zack could see looks of disgust on their faces whenever someone alluded to the fact that John wasn't born with money.
The wedding venue was clearly chosen and paid for by Lauren's father, Bill. Zack spent the morning dodging beautifully dressed bridesmades as he navigated the halls of a sprawling mansion. Lauren and John's friends were some of the most attractive people Zack had ever seen. Outside, a swarm of men dressed as butlers assembled rows of chairs on a perfectly manicured lawn that seemed to stretch into the horizon. Down the hall, Lauren's asshole of a sister, Donna, could be heard yelling at the staff about something clearly inconsequential.
Zack stopped wandering for a minute to chat with his grandfather, Gregory. He was an older gentleman who had been restricted to a wheelchair for as long as Zack could remember. His wife, Linda, Zack's grandmother, was a sweet old woman. She loved cooking for the family and did so on every possible occasional. No one had the heart to tell her that her food had recently become inedible, probably because her vision was too poor to read her old recipe cards. Lauren's grandparents were just as old but they appeared decades younger. Her grandfather, Marcus, had a permanent scowl on his face and his demeanor and German heritage made him extra intimidating to Zack and John. Her grandmother, Zelda, was a busy body who tried her best to plan and control every second of family events.
After an hour of waiting, Zack was confident that the last of the guests had arrived. He dodged a group of John's jock groomsmen as he made his way to the second floor of the mansion. Zack pulled out a small gray machine from a black bag he hid under a beautiful antique bed. It was a unique device he constructed for just this occasion. When the device's switch was flipped, everyone in a half-mile radius would find themselves randomly swapped into a nearby body. When the switch was flipped back, they'd all return to normal.
"Maybe this will teach those rich assholes some empathy" Zack said to himself as he held the device tightly in his hands. He designed it to have a one minute delay so he could move his original body away from it before it activated. He didn't want someone to enter his body and immediately turn it off.
Zack was absolutely certain he wanted to use it, but he wasn't sure of when it'd have the best effect. Should he use it now? During the first kiss? During the reception?
