"You don't just replace a pet." Christine Janice James stopped mopping to make herself clear. "Chester was special to me."
Kirk asked, "Can I have a pet then?"
"No, that's final. That dog can stay for a while as we try to find its owner but even if we don't find its owner, it's not staying with us."
Kirk knew that it was pointless to continue but he might try again later. Kirk took Jared to his room to think. "I don't want to replace Chester either. I just want to keep you Jared. I wish I could change you back and forth, make you human when I want or a dog when I want."
A voice softly said, "That can be arranged."
Jared's fur bristled and he growled.
"He still won't admit that he's a dog. He still thinks he's human. I don't want to simply turn him into a dog. I want him to admit that he is a dog. I want to know who will win, his human nature or his dog nature."
Kirk sat there nervously wondering if he was losing his mind or if he was being haunted by some supernatural being.
"I grant you, Kirk, the ability to make Jared human whenever you want. I do not grant you the ability to make him a dog but don't worry. I'm sure he'll turn himself into a dog all on his own. Let's see how much he's willing to do to persuade you to keep him human."
Kirk was quiet but the voice didn't say anymore. Kirk finally decided to test what he heard. He removed Jared's collar and willed Jared to be human.
Jared stayed on all fours looking up at Kirk wondering what would happen next. He wanted to leave but Kirk was the only one with the power to keep him human.
Kirk admired the naked Jared, especially the smooth beautiful butt that looked great when Jared was on all fours. "I guess I need to get you some clothes and come up with a story to explain how you got here but remember, you are my dog now even if I can't keep you here. Maybe I'll move out. I'll figure something out."
