Catherine shook himself like a wet dog, dispelling the wild thoughts. Sure, running around the Arctic in a wolf's body might seem fantastic, but he especially knew the reality was much harsher. After all, the wolf he had killed seemed to be starving and desperate. There was no guarantee that after a few weeks, he might not meet the same end. No, it was even more likely that he would, since he lacked the upbringing and experience a wolf would have. Theory on wolf behavior paled before the reality of the endless expanse before him. Even if he did not die, he would probably go insane. After all, he still had a human level of intelligence and the education of a scientist. The frustration of being trapped in an animal body forever with no link to humanity or means of communication would drive him mad.
But if he was not remaining out here, what other options were there? He could try to return and explain what had happened, but there was a chance that he would end up a quarantined lab rat for unauthorized use of the serum. There was even a pretty good chance his fellow scientists would not try to change him back because of the risk of using the serum twice. They might just bury him in a kennel somewhere and run all sorts of tests on him without informing anyone of his true identity.
Not to mention, how would they turn him back into Catherine the human woman? Something he had not considered before using the serum, but suddenly flooded into his mind, was the fact that they needed a sample of his blood pre-transformation to make the serum work. Without bothering to save a sample of his own original blood, he had injected the serum in a panic. It was pretty likely he would never truly be "herself" ever again, at least not without months of DNA analysis of his belongings and finding a way to modify the retrovirus, which could take years.
"Then what to do?" he thought, sitting back on his haunches, stunned. There was only one chance: to find someone among the scientists and base residents that he could trust, and go from there. It was not as though there was no chance to be human again, even if the possibility of returning to being "Catherine" was remote. If someone would provide the serum and blood sample, as well as inject it for him, he could become a human at the very least, assuming the serum would work twice.
The biting wind brought Catherine out of his stupor. If there was any chance of returning to humanity in some form, it lay at the base camp. Sliding himself awkwardly into one of the remaining intact dog harnesses and grabbing the line in his teeth, he slowly began hauling the sled in the direction of the base. He would just have to figure out something when he got there.
