It was a large box a few feet big. There was a screen on top, a power button on front, a power plug on the back with the cord, the whole thing was mostly black, and it seemed to have been hit with a sledgehammer a few times. A price sticker on the side said "To whoever wants it." You very well understood why it was a 100% instead of 75% mark down at that point. You took the thing to the front and the cashier just told you to take it, and there are a lot of products in the store that can help you if you need them.
You asked "What exactly is this thing supposed to be?"
The cashier said "I believe that's what we call a Random Box. That particular one scans everyone in an area, and then you select things like age, gender, butt size, height, etc... Then everyone selected has the attributes selected randomized with some things more weighted than others."
You asked "What do you mean by weighted?"
The cashier looked to check if there was a line forming and with none clarified "Well the gender things is pretty binary as it is more about physical sex so it's more of a flip of the coin. However for things like age it would select and age group with teens and young adults being more likely to appear than others. This mostly done as being a toddler or baby with almost no agency or a senior with arthritis is a lot less fun than being in the prime of your life. Similar thing with sizes where you can grow or shrink to absurd sizes but you'll usually stay around a functional size."
You then asked "Then are these random changes temporary?"
The cashier said "I've heard stories of people modding them to make changes permanent, but no at the last stage of picking you can either pick an amount of time or set a time and date for the changes to be reverted. That all said who knows what still works, doesn't work, or if there may be any weird glitches considering how banged up that thing is."
You said "Looks like it turned itself into a soccer ball."
The cashier said "Yeah... Would it surprise you to learn that very much could be a reasonable possibility?" You stared as the cashier said "Our manager actually likes soccer a lot and tends to turn products that aren't moving into soccer balls to play magic soccer with."
You said "I'm pretty good with some tools at least, is there anywhere to get into the thing? I'm not really worried about a warranty." The cashier showed you a place where you could open the thing, and then you left the store after giving the cashier a nice tip.
At home you brought it near an outlet and then wondered what you should do with it...
