Chief O'Hara sighed heavily as he left what was normally his conference room where he would brief his officers on their tasks for the day. In general, he could understand Agent Baoman's reasoning regarding the Gambonis and their activity and could even support the plan for the sting operation not being part of the plan. However, the report he'd been given on Vito Gamboni suspecting something was enough to spook him a little, particularly with the fact that Moon Lake was hiding a rather big secret. It was doubtful that Vito would figure it out, unless someone did something profoundly stupid, but that didn't mean that the risk wasn't there.
He made his way back to his office and noted the setting sun through the window behind his chair and sighed before sitting down, picking up his phone and dialing a number. His practical mind could be assured that things would be reasonably safe, as this wouldn't be the first time Moon Lake had to deal with outside authorities coming in, but that didn't mean that there still weren't proverbial hoops to go through to make sure that no one made a mistake that revealed the were secret to either the FBI or the Gambonis. He waited patiently before he finally got an answer...
"Hello," came Samantha Twist's voice over the other end of the line.
"Hello, Mrs. Twist, I hope you're not too busy with anything," Chief O'Hara spoke.
"Nothing major at the moment... though I was also getting ready to go home for the evening," Samantha answered, "how does the case progress?"
"Slowly... and with some hiccups," Chief O'Hara answered with a sigh, "or at least potential ones."
"Difficulties with the Gambonis... or?" Samantha asked, curious what the chief had reported so far. Much of her involvement with the present operations was mostly due to the fact that it also related to the issue of protecting the Charleston family and the base potential for either the FBI or the Gambonis to get into anything that might uncover Moon Lake's secrets. She didn't think that was likely, as vocal and email warnings to everyone that lived and worked in that part of Moon Lake where the Gambonis were likely to be in Moon Lake had been put in place. No one was likely to talk to much to the Gambonis and no one would get too frisky in the immediate area.
"A potential that there could be issues with Moon Lake's town secret," Chief O'Hara spoke quietly in a hushed whisper.
"Does someone know?" Samantha asked.
"Not outright," Chief O'Hara answered, "but Vito Gamboni seems inordinately spooked and has drawn some conclusions that there is a secret, though he can't tell what that secret is."
"This wouldn't be the first time something like this has happened," Samantha reminded him, "as while there many people out there who are built like a were and could potentially compete with a were physically... most of them will be professional and Olympic level athletes… and they generally won't all be in such a small place. But so long as no one talks or does anything stupid... we shouldn't have a problem."
"Agreed," Chief O'Hara gave a nod, "but for warning... it's meant that Vito's already delayed triggering the sting one day... and we haven't heard yet as to how fast he will act."
"But these things can happen, right?" Samantha asked.
"They can... and under normal circumstances that would be understandable," Chief O'Hara commented, "but given some of the things that you've noted could be issues coming up before now and Halloween... having a group of gangsters and a group of FBI agents hovering around Moon Lake would not be a good idea."
"Do you think that this Vito would push it back that long?" Samantha asked back, "from what the FBI agent has said, Marcus is hot headed enough that he won't wait "patiently" for long."
Chief O'Hara sighed and ran his free hand over his head for a moment, careful not to bunk the phone as he did so. There was that and he knew it, but he still had to report the information to the part of Moon Lake's city government that dealt with the protecting of the were secret.
"Probably not," Chief O'Hara spoke, "but, given that we know where they are... it would be better to take them down quickly, which would stand to protect the were secret."
"I see... the measures to make sure no one is transformed near the hotel are in place?" Samantha asked back.
"Yes," Chief O'Hara spoke, "No one should see anything. Much of this is just a warning, as it were."
"I see," was the reply, "well... if there is no plausible way for the Gambonis to find out the were secret and the odds are likely that Vito can't keep Marcus restrained for long... we'll have to let Agent Baoman's strategy play out. But thank you for the update."
