“Fairy.” Mary closed her hand around a vial containing lilac-colored liquid and was engraved with the image of a humanoid with insect wings. Mary stepped away from the container and, holding it a distance away from her, uncorked the vial. Using her free hand, she wafted the fumes of the vial toward her. Even if this was magic, she knew from chemistry class not to directly inhale unknown substances. Mary couldn’t quite place what it smelled like. It was like flowers, perfume, and candy all rolled into one.
“Well…. Bottoms up, I guess.” she said gulping down the contents. Carol sat next to her, patiently watching. Almost instantly Mary was hit with an intense pushing sensation. It wasn’t exactly painful, but it definitely wasn’t pleasant. It was if she was being pushed on from all directions. Suddenly she felt as she was being pulled downward, but she hadn’t actually moved.
“Mary, you’re shrinking!” Aunt Carol yelled excitedly. Indeed Mary felt her Pajamas were incredibly loose on her, and she was now eye level with the dining room table, when she previously stood a few feet above. Another pulling sensation sent her tumbling into her clothes, consumed by the darkness of her pajamas. She suddenly heard a booming noise from outside, which she quickly realized was her aunt’s voice. Her tiny size made her register “normal” sounds as being louder. She saw the silhouette of Carol’s now boulder-sized hand grab for her. Lifted, into the light, Mary now took stock of her now much larger world. What was before a normal kitchen was now more like a massive dungeon in a video game, with so many nooks and crannies to explore. Suddenly Mary keeled over as her shoulders began to ache. The pulling sensation returned as she felt her shoulder blades push outwards. She was in pain, yet she couldn’t help but smile to herself. She know what was coming: wings. Indeed, two gossamer, dragonfly-esque wings slowly emerged from her back.
Slowly the pain faded away and Mary was able to catch her breath. “Mary, are you alright?” Carol boomed from above. Mary felt herself being lowered onto the dining room table, although it now resembled a flat wooden plain. “Yeah I’m OK, but could you please talk quieter? Your voice sounds so loud when I’m this small.” There was silence as Carol stared at her niece. Then suddenly Carol erupted into thunderous laughter as Mary was knocked on her butt by the galeforce winds her aunt produced.
“HAHAHAHA...OOH…...ooh…..oof!” Carol was desperately trying to regain her composure, but was definitely on the edge of another laughing spree and there were tears in her eyes. “I’m sorry, it’s just….. You sound like a freaking cartoon character!”. Her voice was quieter and less forceful, but to Mary it still felt like being hit in the face with a blast off hot air. Mary ignored it and turned her attention to her new appendages. “So…. how do these work?” She quietly mused. “Think wonderful thoughts!” her aunt offered sarcastically. Now it was Mary’s turn to roll her eyes and sigh. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to try it. She closed her eyes and thought about things she liked. Chocolate....dogs.....anime......Derrick Anderson who sat next to her in English class….(she blushed a little thinking about him, but Mary was confident that Carol couldn't tell at her size).
That was when Mary felt a jolt run through her wings. “It’s working!” she thought. She concentrated harder. As she summoned more good thoughts the jolts came faster and faster and her wings began to beat. Suddenly Mary found that she could no longer feel the floor beneath her feet. She opened her eyes while still trying to keep the good thoughts coming. She looked down. The at her aunt, who stood there slack jawed.. Then down again. Then back at her aunt. “Auntie I did it! I’m flying!” Mary cheered. Technically it was more like hovering, but that changed as she continued to let the “happiness magic” do its work. She did a loop-de-loop, thnn a figure 8, and then a barrel roll. “Mary, come over here before you hurt yourself.” Carol warned in a whisper. Pouting slightly, Mary hovered over to her aunt and rested on Carol’s shoulder. She suddenly had a thought about her aunt’s favorite childhood video game. Giggling, she leaned in to her aunt’s ear. “HEY, LISTEN!” she exclaimed, trying to sound as cutesy as possible. Her aunt couldn’t help but grin. “Oh no, my worst nightmare come to life.” Carol remarked.
