After first targeting his sister Miranda, Roy ran inside his parents house and looked for some random inanimate object to target for the other role in this swap. His eyes quickly settled on a large family portrait they had done a few years ago, now hanging in the living room. Roy pointed the device at the picture and pressed the button.
At first it seemed like nothing had happened.
Then Roy noticed his hands were smaller, more delicate, and distinctly feminine now. His fingers were long and slender and had silvery lavender polish on the nails.
“Ohmygod!”he said. He instantly recognized he now had Miranda's voice.
Looking down at himself, Roy realized he now had Miranda's body and was dressed just the way she had been: white blouse, plaid skirt, ankle socks, tennis shoes... he even had a large, pink fabric book bag identical to hers, now slung over his shoulder.
“Why did I change?” Roy said aloud. "That's not how this thing is supposed to work."
Then he looked back at the family portrait.
Everyone in the family appeared to be an exact duplicate of Miranda. They were all the same age, same height, dressed in the same clothes – they had become a family of sixteen year old female clones. Mom, Dad, himself, and his little brother Billy... he couldn't tell any of them apart in the family photo.
The only one that looked different from a distance, was what used to be Miranda. Roy turned, quickly brushing his new hair out of the way, to see the strangest sight walking down the road. It was some odd Frankenstein of a person. Half of their upper half looked like Roy's father, while the other side looked like Roy. The left leg was frumpy but feminine like his mother's while the other one was half as long and looked like Billy's. The new "person" hopped along on its longer leg, and Roy realized what the device could do.
“This is so weird,” whispered Roy to himself.
