No one in your world believed in the gods anymore; they were just fairy tales to frighten naughty children. A relic of a weak and superstitious past. A tool to be exploited by those who desired adulation and power.
But you knew better. After all, you had entered the Archive in order to achieve your goal: to obtain the power of a god. Yes, they had once existed. Who knows, they might still exist, observing the world from a distance as disinterested observers. Heavens know they have never done anything to fix the warped realm they had created. Therefore, since their power was going to waste as it was, it was only right that you obtain it and instead put said power to good use.
Of course, the powers of the gods were many and varied. Gods of wind, water, flame, stone, darkness, light, war, wisdom...the list went on and on. And of course, that was just their abilities. Just as there were gods that considered themselves good, there were those that aligned themselves with evil. Therefore, searching for the power of a god was a crapshoot; there was no guarantee of what sort of power you would obtain.
But all that did not matter; you still wanted it, you still needed it. Brushing back a few loose strands of your hair, you turn the page of the Lexicon Infernal to see what you have been searching for: the map to a divine core.
A divine core held the power of a god, but there was no telling what sort of power it was until it fused with a being that could unleash its power. There was no detail as to what the nature was of core the map led to, but that did not matter. What did matter was the cost. You knew you would pay it, no matter what it was, in order to achieve your goal. Your finger almost trembling in excitement, you follow the line across the page of the Lexicon Infernal to the section which detailed what was demanded in return for the information. Even though you knew that would only be a payment for the map, and not a description of what else you would have to sacrifice in order to obtain the divine core, you considered it a down payment on a much bigger return. Your eyes scrutinized the demands made by the Lexicon Infernal, steeling yourself to do what you must. But what exactly does it demand?
