Suddenly a large boom erupted from outside the house and they all jumped. Janet ran to Steve and threw her arms around him. Megan squeezed in between them but Alan stayed where he was. He wanted to join the family hug but no self respecting 15 year old did that. So he stayed rooted to the spot.
A heavy rain started to fall and Steve laughed, gently shrugging away his wife and daughter.
"See, it's just a storm. Com'n, we'll be fine. Let's just relax for the night." he said, eyes still fixed on the broken mirror.
"But Dad, what about the mirror?" Megan asked. "It fell on it's own. The rain didn't do that."
"Oh shut up, Megan," Alan whispered. Megan started to respond but their mother shushed them. She was looking up at the ceiling. They all followed her train of sight.
"There's something up there," she whispered. And sure enough, the sound of footsteps could be heard.. This time Alan ran over to the rest of his family.
"Maybe its the owner of the house," Steve said, "we should probably make our presence known." But as he said that, he looked around and by the inches of dust on everything, it was obvious that no one lived here for some time.
They heard a door open on the second floor and they all ran for the closet. When they opened it, they saw a walkway leading down into what looked like a basement.
