"I wish," I said, staring at my cousin, "That you were an angel, beyond anyone's ability to bully." Sara looked at me puzzled as the wish took effect, her eyes still bloodshot but the blue now impossibly bright. A glowing light began to form around her as her jeans and t-shirt began to flow together, reweaving into a wrap of white, pinned in place to leave the back open. She was no taller than before at 5'6", but her posture was immeasurably better and she moved with precision, grace, and dignity.
From her back, I saw her skin split and white feathered wings, first small but growing and growing until they towered over her, nearly to my height. I stared down at her and felt a wave of admiration, or adoration, or awe flow over me. It was subtle but distinct, I suspect somewhat held at bay by my nature as a Kirin now. She was smiling sadly up at me.
"I just feel so sorry for them. In this terrible world we live in, they are so cruel to others and make things worse. I try to help them but those dragons have dark desires and no Lord to guide them."
I laughed slightly, "I mean, surely they could be convinced?"
Sara shook her head slightly. "Not by me, not since I know that the Lord is no more."
I stared at her, pole-axed. "Say what now?"
"Do you think this world we live in would work the way it does? With magic and dragons? I am the last angel, and god has died."
I glanced down at my ring. Did...did I do that? What was going on?
"You...you know that?"
She nodded. "Months ago. I remember my connection being severed, cut off. I was trapped here on earth, with no way back to the Lord or the other angels. It was a surprise enough to be born here to Cathy, but that is the way of angels. To come where they are needed."
I considered all this news, wondering how much had been true before my wishes if anything. I nodded slowly to Sara and took her hand I would...
