All throughout the crowd, men, women, and children stumbled about as wings sprang from their backs. Directed by some awakening instinct, they launched themselves into the air, away from the restricted space of the streets. Once aloft, they entered the next stage of transformation, losing all semblance to human beings and gaining something much better, and far more ancient. In minutes, more reptilian shapes joined the royal family in circling the city.
To Charnabeth, it was like watching a kind of migration in progress. Quickly, the sea of people below rose up to join the cloud darkening the skies. Draconic roars rumbled over the landscape, and their new queen added her voice to spur them on.
Finally, the last human left in the desolate capital, a teenage boy, staggered out from a building. Before his wings had even fully developed, he leapt off the ground, beating his new appendages to gain more height. Lifting his head, he let out a yell that deepened into a roar as his face and neck pushed forward into those of a dragon. A long bony crest jutted back from his triangular skull, yet another feature that would add to his uniqueness.
His body subsequently altered, bursting from his clothes which fluttered down to join the tattered rags littering the streets and rooftops. Tucking his four new talons beneath him, he cut through the winds more easily as his arrow-dynamics improved. While a thin, tapering tail stretched from his backside, his male genitals shrank back, melting into the tight folds of a vagina. Instead of a dragon, she had become a dragoness.
Seeing this, Charnabeth smiled, flashing her sharp teeth. The phenomenon was hardly unexpected. After all, other than the king, everyone else in the city had become fully developed dragonesses.
This was merely a part of the plan. Oh, there would be more males soon enough. For the next stage of her plan, however, she needed females. Lots and lots of females.
Raising her great wings, huge things that could almost encompass two of the other dragonesses in their shadow, she jumped from the balcony. The downward force ripped the stone structure from the castle wall to send it crashing into the empty courtyard. Leaving the earth far behind, she climbed through the swirling galaxy of dragons that surrounded her on every side. They were following their leader now occupying the highest position. Charnabeth’s vast wingspan helped her to gain on him quickly. It was time to claim her mate.
