Walking through the aisle, you pay little heed to most of the things you walk past but then something catches your eyes. A hat. Now, you aren't a hat person but this item seems to be genuine and of decent quality and despite the little frugal voice in your head screaming that you dont need this and should pay down your car loan... you really want this hat.
You cautiously pick it up... and tell yourself that if it doesn't fit you'll put it back without a second thought... you rest it on your head and it fits perfectly...
You sate the screaming voice by telling it that if its too expensive you'll forget about it, Looking at the item you quickly value it at at least 15, but probably more like 20 dollars, and agree (with yourself) that if its more than 10, you will put it back... You look for a price on the Aisle and don't find one.. you look on the hat itself and find nothing... You want to put it back but you really like the design and how it feels in your hands. Despite the voice reminding you how poor you are, you carry the item to the front counter... "Um, excuse me. How much might this be?"
The man at the counter looks up at you, surprised you should have any questions. He slowly takes the item and looks at it appraisingly. Looks at you coolly over the item, then looks back at the hat.
"It seems one of our clearance items has found its way back to the shelf. This should be 7.49 plus tax."
You gasp in disbelief. "Really?" you question shocked by how cheap they are selling it for.
The man quickly back pedals. "Did I say 7.50? I meant 5. This item has been here for ages and nobody give it a second glance." He give a cold smile that is emotionless.
"Oh" you mumble. The voice in your head screaming that you didn't need it in the first place and it isn't your style anyway. You stand in silence for a moment in quiet argument with your conscience.
Apparently your silence made the the shop keep uncomfortable, "Oh, today only, 50% off clearance items... its actually 2.50..."
That settled it. You asked the voice, "Really? What now?" and no reply came.
You told the shop keep you'd take it and payed with 1 single, three quarters, 4 dimes, and a slew of nickels and pennies to cover the rest and tax.
You walked out with your new hat and an unexpected sense of completeness.
