The unique scent of unicorns caught Derrick's attention more than any other, and he decided to follow it. He was not so much surprised to find unicorns on this remote island as he was realizing that hew simply knew what an animals he had never seen before smelled like. It was a nice smell, sorta of a cross between fresh-cut grass, honeysuckle, and a kind of urine-sweat odor that was warm, salty, and pleasant.
Other creatures moved around him as he continued North - a herd of deer watched him without apparent concern, and he spotted a large tawny cat, maybe a lioness, following him with her eyes. The carnivore concerned him briefly, but then he decided to trust Circe's guarantee that none would harm him. That knowledge combined with his 'wild' body to make him feel totally safe and even at home as he made his way through the woods. He almost laughed thinking of his last hiking experience. Burdened with a backpack, and wearing thick clothing to protect from insects and thorns. All those clothes, pieces of equipment, silly toys. He had thought he was experiencing nature. THIS was nature - making his way naked and unafraid - one of the forest's citizens, not just an observer.
He wasn't sure what he expected. A white horse with horn? That was how they were usually shown in movies and TV shows. But when he came out into a clearing and spotted the creature, he stopped dead with a gasp. If Derrick had to make a comparison, he would probably have said the unicorn looked more a combination of goat, deer, and horse sculpted out of moonlight. More like polished silver than white, the unicorn had the requisite spiral spike emerging from its forehead, a horn that seemed to sparkle softly. It regarded him with brilliant blue eyes that radiated intelligence.
Derrick was frozen in place, awed and then a little afraid. Circe had said no beasts here would harm him, but this was a UNICORN! He struggled to think of what they did, what you were supposed to do. Something about virgins - they were used to trap unicorns, weren't they? But he was not hunting - hopefully the unicorn wasn't either.
The magnificent creature snorted and ambled over to where Derrick stood. Heart pounding, the boy remained still as delicate pink-white nostrils snuffled in his direction. The horn looked very sharp, though the tip was hard to see clearly through the glow. After a minute, the unicorn stepped close and started to snuffle and lip at Derrick's exposed skin. The sensation was pleasant, if embarrassing, especially when the unicorn's lips pulled gently at his crotch. The inspection continued down to his toes, and then moved back up to his head. Thick lips pulls lightly at his hair, his ears, his nose., warm grass-scented breath filling his nostrils. Derrick's tension eased, then faded away to wonder and happiness as he was snuffled, licked, and nuzzled. His eyes met the brilliant blue orbs of the unicorn and cold not move away. They stood there, staring at each other, for what seemed like a very long time. The unicorn tilted its head down until the point of its horn lightly touched the center of Derrick's forehead, still gazing into the boy's eyes.
And then it lunged forward with a sudden motion that drove the glowing spiral horn into Derrick's skull so hard their foreheads met!
