Megan let her arms down fearing for the worst, but was relieved to find that her life appeared unchanged. She checked just to make sure and saw all her clothes were normal, and that she was still in the same place. Out of the corner of her eye, she could also see that the mirror had returned to he bag. She felt happy that she wasn't changed, that is, until she realized what that meant.
"Kim." She said to herself.
"What did you say Ms. Donaldson?" She heard Kim say from behind her.
Megan turned to see Kim was now standing behind their lunch table. Her hair was the same color but now styled in a more mature looking ponytail, she now wore glasses, and her clothes were a stereotypical teacher's skirt and top but resized for a middle school student. Kim looked annoyed, but not because she remembered what happened, but because of what Megan said.
"Ms. Donaldson." She continued. "I may be the same age as you, but I am a history teacher in this school and you will show me respect. You can call me Ms. Chang. Good day Megan." She said in a snooty tone before walking off with some of the other faculty. Megan just sat dumbfounded.
"Megan you're lucky you didn't;t get it worse than that." Megan's friend Cindy whispered.
"Yeah." He other friend Chloe agreed. "Ms. Chang is usually a lot meaner than that."
Megan just silently agreed. Her friends went back to talking as she watched her friend Kim walk off with her new job as a middle school history teacher. She felt beyond awful. Kim was her closest friend, and now she was nothing but a teacher to Megan. Megan tried not to cry as she excused herself from her table saying she needed to go to the bathroom. The second she was out of sight, she pulled out her phone and called her mother.
"M-Mom?" She asked, obviously a little shaken.
"Oh honey what's the matter?" A female voice that definitely wasn't her mother's.
"Who is.... wait, Dad?" Megan asked confused.
"Oh right, sorry honey. Your mother and I were having a little fun so we swapped genders for a bit." He explained.
"Alllllright then." Megan replied. "A-anyway, I have a problem."
"What's up baby?" He asked.
"Well, I was daydreaming, thinking about stuff I could do for my last change you know? And, well, I accidentally let Kim use the mirror, and now she's a teacher and we're not friends anymore."
Steve sighed. "Megan, this is exactly why we wanted you two to have limited magic use. We didn't need you guys accidentally changing the entire school."
"I know I'm so sorry." Megan apologized. "Can I just use the mirror one more time to change her back?"
"No." Steve flatly said in a 'can I speak to the manager' tone.
"W-what?" She asked confused.
"Sorry honey, but you know the rules. You should have been a lot more careful than just handing over your magic like that. Kim is fine. I'm sorry she's not gonna remember being friends with you today, but you can change her back first thing tomorrow."
"But that's not fair! It was my fault Kim changed, she shouldn't suffer because of me." She reasoned.
"Kim isn't suffering. At worst, you're upset because you misused your power. This is the consequence. Of course, you can change her back anytime you want, just remember that you'll be punished if you do so." Steve lectured. "Understand honey?"
"Yes." Megan sadly said. As much as she wanted to object, nothing her temporarily feminine father said was wrong. It was her fault for not paying attention. Plus, it wasn't like Kim knew anything was wrong. But still, she couldn't stand knowing that she was in a world without her best friend.
Steve hung up after a quick goodbye and Megan leaned against the wall in thought. She pulled out her mirror and looked at it, trying to decide what to do. The bell rung and she realized she had to decide now.
