“Argh!” He grimaced looking at the scale “Dammit! Another five pounds!?”
Darrick raged just stopping himself from smashing the scales with his foot.
Darrick Warren was a 20 year old collage quarter and a great one at that. Everyone said that he’d obviously make pro, he was showered with deals and complements of his skill and talent but people didn’t say that stuff behind his back. No Darrick was hated by his team, his couch and his teachers.
Darrick seamed to be always angry, never happy, always upset about something. His parents couldn’t even recall the last time they had seen him smile. Last time he had done anything but grimace at everything.
He had plenty reason to. He was extremely unhappy with his life. He had no real friends, his family were distant and didn’t care about him. Nothing brought him joy. But football give him purpose. It didn’t make him happy but it did motivate him.
Without he would just drift through life alone and purposeless. He would defend that one piece of his identity with all his might! He wouldn’t let the other players, his teachers or family get to him. He would never stop playing football. Nothing would stop him!
But something was happening to him. He was rapidly losing weight despite him eating more. His muscles felt like they were straining more while training. He wasn’t performing at his best.
Despite all that he had refused to go to a doctor. His pride prevented him from doing so. Thinking it was just his own weakness but now he couldn’t let it go on. People were starting to notice. Notice his weakness!
Darrick couldn’t let this go on any longer he had to know what was wrong with him. He had to stop it! Before it ruins him.
He shuck his head at that thought. No matter what was wrong with him he would still continue and persevere through anything! Nothing could take away his identity like that. Nothing.
He thought that until he heard from the doctor the true source.
‘“It seems like your infected with the monster virus.”the doctor spook in a serious matter of fact voice.
Darrick was speechless.
The doctor continued “it looks like your transformation will be very soon. As a doctor I would recommend staying at the hospital during that time to ensure your given the proper facilities and diagnosis immediately but it’s your choice.”
Darrick wasn’t listening. The man could’ve been saying anything and Darrick would be nodding his head.
He was in complete despair. Becoming a monster meant he wouldn’t be allowed on the team anymore. All of his bravado and determination disappeared in one sentence. He wasn’t even angry. He couldn’t feel anything. Just emptiness.
When the doctor finished talking Darrick got up and left the room silently.
